For England and Wales, the area they died in
Scotland may be different.

Currently the registration can be made in the district where the death
occurred, or the district where the person was resident; both registrars
will have the death in their local index (1966 onward), but only the
registrar to whom the death was reported will have a local copy of the
registration. In earlier times, ISTR the death could have been registered
anywhere in Scotland, but with the details being transcribed to the district
where the death occurred.

Deaths can be registered in the district where the person died or where
their home was. I am not sure if this was always the case but I assume
it was.
