Can someone please tell me if a person dies in a different area to the one
they lived in, is the death registered in the area they died in, or the area
they lived in.

Many thanks.

For England and Wales, the area they died in

Scotland may be different.

I had the misfortune to have to report to the authorities the death of my
younger brother, whilst he was visiting us in Cornwall, from his home in
Evesham.
The certificate (in front of me) was registered in St Austell, which was the
closest to his place of death.
Obviously there is a gap there for his "occupation and usual address" also

Hope it helps....

Currently the registration can be made in the district where the death
occurred, or the district where the person was resident; both registrars
will have the death in their local index (1966 onward), but only the
registrar to whom the death was reported will have a local copy of the
registration. In earlier times, ISTR the death could have been registered
anywhere in Scotland, but with the details being transcribed to the district
where the death occurred.

Re Scotland

Deaths can be registered in the district where the person died or where
their home was. I am not sure if this was always the case but I assume
it was.
