John Crissman (c1736-1810) and wife Joanna were active at the Indianfield
Zion Lutheran Church, Montgomery Co., Pa., from 1759-1762. In 1766 he
purchased land from Duncan Ogg in Baltimore Co., Maryland, which he sold
in 1773. Their name appears occassionally in the Pipe Creek Church records
near present day Westminster, Carroll Co., Maryland. The same records
contain frequent references to another John Chrisman and his wife Mary
Magdalena. These two John Crissman/Chrisman's were first cousins. I am
a descendant of John and Mary Magdalena Chrisman. John and Joanna Crissman
moved to Bedford Co., Pa in 1773. On 8 Oct 1773 "John Christman of Baltimore
County, Maryland, yeoman" purchased 25 acres in Bedford Co. from James
Fletcher. Then in tax records and censuses from 1780 until 1810, John
and Joanna Crissman appear in Bedford Co., Pa. On 27 Aug 1790, he
patented 300 acres in Bedford Co. In 1806 he appears in the records of the
old log church in Schellsburg, Bedford Co., Pa. His will dated 20 May 1805
was proved 16 Jan 1810. Names wife Hannah [Joanna], sons Jeremiah, John,
Benjamin; dau. Sarah Brown, Catharine Fligle, Mary Swager, Rachel Wertz,
Hannah Hull, Ruth Crisman wife of Elijah Crisman, and granddaughter Abigail.
Also John and Elizabeth, children of George Crisman, deceased. [W.B. 1:278]
The will of Hannah Crisman of the Township of Bedford was dated 1 Mar 1815,
proved 15 Apr 1815, named sons William and Jeremiah, son-in-law Jacob
Flagle, grnaddaughter Elizabeth Crisman. Daughters Sarah, Catherine, Mary,
Rachel, Hanah, and Ruth. Executors: trusty friends Henry Kunce and Richard
Silver. Wit: Joshua Pierson and John Herbaugh.
I do not know the authority for the maidenname of Johanna Marie (?Weber)
Crissman.
John Crissman (1736-1810) was the son of Johannes Cro:ssmann and his
first wife Anna Catherine Heilman. Johannes Croessmann was b. 10 Sep
1707 in Pfungstadt, Hesse, a small town about 8 miles south of Darmstadt,
present day population of about 28,000. His birth is recorded in the
Lutheran Church records of that town, and printed in the "Partial History
of the Cressman-Crissman-Croesman-Kressman Families", 1971, #123. This book
is available for $8 from the Cressman family association, as well as
their $2/yr newsletter and more recent info.
The arrival of Johannes Croessmann to America is uncertain. Virkus 7:418
says Germany to Philadelphia in 1732. His name is
normally seen as Hans Jurg Croesman, or "Johannes of Indian Field".
He may have resided near Trappe early on, but apparently took up residence
in an area above Salford Township, and on a petition apparently for the
township of Franconia. He purchased 140 from Budd and Murrey before 1734
and was assessed for it that year. But about 1750 he had retired to Rockhill
Township, and when he and his (second) wife Sophia sold their plantation
to Hans Bernard Kunser, 27 Apr 1750. [James F. Heckler's "History of Franconia
Twp."].
Dec 1744: A petition concerning a road through Franconia twp. was filed by
Jost Cope and includes his name as well as other Croesmans, printed in
"History and Genealogy of teh Reed Family", by W. H. Reed, 1929, p. 448.
7 Mar 1774, John Chrisman, Blacksmith of Rockhill Twp, Bucks Co., purchased
1 acre+ of land. 22 May 1775, 2 more acres. He is on tax records of
Franconia Twp, 1779, 1780, 1782, & 1783.
His will was dated 16 Apr 1786, probated 26 Mar 1786 in Montgomery Co. Pa.
Names sons Anthony and John, and Elisabeth who was married to Henry Hartman,
Mary married to George Wissel, Catherine, her son William mellinger, and
Hannah married to Conrad Siple. No mention of a wife. To be buried on John
Furman's land, which unfortunately was long ago plowed under with no remaining
trace of a tombstone.
Anna Catherine Heilman, b. 1704, d. bef 1750 (but Virkus says 1698-1754)
was the dau. of Anthony Heilman (c1671-bur. 16 July 1759), prob. from
Kleinniedesheim, Germany, d. Skippack Pa, and wife Maria Salome (1673-1745).
John Croessman m(2). bef 27 Apr 1750, Sophia (---) Houck, b. c 1704,

John Croesman, the immigrant, was the son of Johan Valentine Chrisman, Baker,
b. 13 Oct 1667 in Pfungstadt, d. May 1730 in Pfungstadt [Lutheran Church
Records, in Cressman "Gold Book" #67, #94, #130], and his first wife
Anna Maria Hubner, of Klein, Niedersheim, Germany, d. 7 Mar 1710 in
Pfungstadt [#128]. They m. 24 Jan 1693 in Pfungstadt. These are also
my ancestors. Johan Valentine m(2) Anna Margaretha Heyl on 23 Sep 1710 in
Pfungstadt, and had 6 children with each wife. Many of these children
immigrated to America in the 1720s, 1730s, and 1740s.
John Valentine Chrisman, Baker, was the son of Johan Friedrich Chrisman,
b. 26 Nov 1629 Pfungstadt, bur. 31 Dec 1669 Pfungstadt, and wife
Catherina. Wife's name is from Cressman Newsletter Spring 1994, as is
his parentage: His father was Nicolaus Chrisman, b. 16 Jun 1590 Pfungstadt,
d. c1680 [#29,#17] and his mother Anna Schmidt, m. 1613. Nicolaus's
father was Hans Chrisman, b. 1576 Pfungstadt, d. 1604 Pfungstadt,
m. 17 Jun 1576 Apollonia Zyb. He is named as "Hans by the town hall".
Finally, his father was Christen Chrisman, living 1580 in Pfungstadt.

I would love to obtain whatever information you have on children of
William Chrisman Esq (1764-1842). I have a few pages of records on
him, but only a few notes on two of his sons (William and Andrew) and not
much more. Hope to hear from you.
