Good Day to All,
I'm hoping to make contact with others of these names to
share information. My own particular branch of the family is firmly traced
back to ARGUILEs living in Barwell, Leicestershire, England in 1706 and 95%
sure this family was the immediate offsprings of William ARGILE bn.1673 at
Wykin, Hinckley, Leics. I have several trees of the family, my own of course
plus those of emmigrants to South Africa and North and South Islands of New
Zealand.
The earliest records of the name in any significant numbers start to
crop up from 1615 onwards straddling the county borders of Derbyshire,
Staffordshire and Leicestershire, I've plotted earliest dates from the IGI
against placenames and they seem to radiate from the 1615 occurrence leading
to a suspicion that we're all related in Leicestershire. The one exception
to this is a family in Market Bosworth, Leics. who originated in Church
Gresley, Derbs., this family is documented in the L.D.S. Family Search
section of the IGI CD-ROM and at least one member of this family together
with a Derbyshire cousin migrated to Utah, U.S.A. There's one Argule and
four Argyles listed in the 1871 Ontario, Canada census.
Having completed my own tree back to 1673? I'm now trying to push
the origins of the family back in time and to pin down the rumours I've come
across, such as one member hung for sheep stealing, another executed at
Tyburn being one of five brothers coming to Leics. from Scotland. It's been
suggested that the family may have come South from Scotland as cattle
drovers. A member of the Derbyshire Argyles claims Argyl as a MacGregor
alias and were Jacobites, this chap's grandfather was the premier of the
state of Victoria in Australia in the 1930's. I hope the foregoing
hotchpotch as aroused someone's curiosity.
Anyway enough of these ramblings, don't forget I've a fair bit of
information to share, please get in touch I'm happy to provide what I've
got, you don't have to have any info. to swap.
All the Best, Vic
