SUBJECT: POWELL; Duplin Co., NC; before 1770
Information regarding anyone named Powell [or "Bowell"] who resided in
Duplin County, NC, prior to 1770 is requested. I am seeking the
parents or siblings of an Ambrose Powell who resided in Robeson
County, NC, from about 1778 until his death, around 1814 or 1815.
I have information on the Douglas Powell, Sr., family of Duplin,
Sampson, Wayne, Bladen and Robeson Counties, NC, including ancestors
and some descendants, which I willing to share. My Ambrose Powell was
not named as a sibling in the will of Starling Powell, who died in
Wayne Co., NC,. Starling Powell was a son of Douglas Powell, Sr., and
Starling Powell's will is the only record yet found that names the
children of Douplas Powell, Sr.
Also, can anyone add to or correct any of the following data regarding
Powell families of Robeson County, NC? I would like to correspond
with anyone descended from these Powell families.
In the past I believed that Charles Powell of Robeson County, NC, was
probably the son of Douglas Powell, Sr., of Duplin County, NC.
On a December, 1995, trip to Robeson County I found proof that Charles
Powell was a son of Ambrose Powell and a brother of John Powell,
"Betsy" Powell, and Mrs. Emelia Powell Humphrey, wife of Elias
Humphrey. This proof was found in two deeds, dated 1814 [deed of gift
from Ambrose Powell to his three children: John, Elizabeth, and
Emelia, recorded Deed Book R, page 7] and 1815 [division of the
property by the three children, recorded Deed Book R, pages 142-143].
The second deed stated that John Powell was to receive a 50 acre tract
of land on which his brother, Charles Powell, previously resided.
Following is a tentative reconstruction of some of the Powell families
of Robeson County, NC, who were NOT descended from Douglas Powell,
Sr., of Brunswick Co., VA, and Duplin Co., NC. Ambrose Powell, Sr.,
Isaiah Powell, and Lewis Powell, Sr., of Robeson County, NC, records
are presumed to be brothers, but there is as yet no proof. Their
father(s) is/are unidentified.
1. Ambrose Powell was born before 1730, based on the estimated year
of birth of about 1750 of his son, Charles Powell. Ambrose appears
to have joined his son, Charles Powell, in Robeson (then Bladen)
County in 1777 or 1778, when Charles Powell conveyed half of his
100 acre grant to Ambrose Powell, his father. Ambrose probably
died soon after 1814. [This deed, plus subsequent grants and
deeds to Ambrose Powell dated in the 1780s, clearly prove that
this Ambrose Powell was not in Fayette County, Virginia/Kentucky,
prior to 1790, as was assumed in a submission to the LDS
International Genealogical Index.]
4. Charles Powell was an adult by NOV 1771 when he was granted
100 acres land on the Great Marsh [Creek] in the part of
Bladen County that became Robeson County. He was thus born
1750 or earlier. He migrated to Washington County, GA, about
late 1799 or early 1800. He probably died in Laurens County,
GA, after the 1820 census, when he appeared to be residing
with his son, James Powell. No will or estate settlement has
been found. I have information on some of the descendants of
Charles Powell that I am willing to share.
5. John Powell married, probably second, Mary Humphrey in
Robeson County in MAR 1816. BORN DUPLIN CO., NC, about 1763,
per 1850 census. Served in Rev. War FROM DUPLIN COUNTY!
John Powell died 19 JAN 1851 in Robeson County. His widow
received a pension based on the military service in the
Revolutionary War of John Powell. [If this John Powell was
the same John Powell named by Ambrose Powell in 1814 as his
son, then it proves that Ambrose Powell had resided in Duplin
County prior to his arrival in Bladen/Robeson County.]
6. Elizabeth ("Betsy") Powell was apparently unmarried in 1815.
An Elizabeth Powell appeared on the 1790 and 1800 census of
Robeson County, NC.
7. Emelia Powell married Elias Humphrey. This family has not
yet been traced. Any information about this family will be
appreciated.
8. [Probably] William Powell, who married a daughter of Margaret
Campbell, with Ambrose Powell a witness to a DEC 1794 deed from
Margaret Campbell to her son-in-law, William. A 1795 grant to
Ambrose Powell, Sr., bordered William Powell's property.
[It is possible that William Powell was a son of the OTHER
Ambrose Powell who arrived in Robeson County from Fayette
County, Virginia/Kentucky, between 1790 and 1794. The fact
that an Ambrose Powell and a William Powell both migrated to
Washington County, GA, between 1810 and 1820, suggests they
were both related to Charles Powell, son of Ambrose Powell,
Sr. Note: The Ambrose Powell, "Sr." and "Jr." of Robeson
County, NC, subsequent to 1815, were probably the Ambrose
Powell, Jr., of the 1790s, and his son. See below.]
Five other purported children of Ambrose Powell were reported in a
submission to the International Genealogical Index (IGI). These have
not been confirmed. It appears likely that the two different Ambrose
Powells of Robeson County, NC, were confused. These were apparently
the children of the younger of the two Ambrose Powells in Robeson
County, NC, in the 1790s. [The reference for the IGI submission was
LDS FHC Batch 8404601, Sheet 91, Source 1395718 Film.]
a. Ambrose Powell, born about 1785, Fayette County, VA/KY
b. John Wells Powell, b. 21 APR 1787, Fayette County, VA/KY
c. Nancy Ann Powell, b. 20 JUL 1794, Lumberton, Robeson Co., NC,
m. James M. Ashley, 1 SEP 1814, Robeson Co., NC
d. Ervin C. Powell, b. about 1799, Lumberton, Robeson Co., NC
e. Martha G. Powell, b. aobut 1803, Lumberton, Robeson Co., NC
2. Isaiah Powell, was taxed in Cumberland County in 1755, thus was
probably born before 1735. He owned land on Ten Mile Swamp in
Robeson County adjacent to Lewis Powell, Sr. Died before 1802.
The following three were listed successively on the 1790 census of
Robeson County and are presumed to be brothers. They are ASSUMED
to be sons of Isaiah Powell because Lewis, II, named a son Isaiah.
Isaiah's land was adjacent Milby Musslewhite. Land sold by Lewis
Powell [II], in FEB 1805 was adjacent Mrs. Musslewhite.
9. Lewis Powell, II, Revolutionary Soldier, born about 1750 in
Bladen County, NC [possibly became Cumberland Co. in 1754].
Died 1839, Dooly County, GA. m1 Mary, probably Baggett, who
died after 1803. She was probably the mother of all of his
children. m2 Mrs. Sarah (Slater) Wilkes in Laurens Co., GA.
10. Joseph Powell. Joseph's land was sold at public auction by
the Sheriff in 1796. No later records in Robeson County.
11. "Katy" [probably Cader] Powell. No records have been
found in Robeson County except the 1790 census.
3. Lewis Powell, Sr., owned two tracts of land on Ten Mile Swamp,
adjacent Isaiah Powell. Lewis apparently died after selling this
land in Robeson County in 1796. In 1800 this land was sold again,
with Catherine Powell, a resident of Robeson County, as co-grantor.
[Catherine Powell proved the title of the 1796 purchaser.]
Catherine Powell was, thus, the widow of Lewis Powell. Catherine
Powell died 1800 or later, place unknown, probably Robeson County.
[Was she possibly the Catherine McRae who married Lewis Powell, Jr.,
of Cumberland County, NC, per DAR applications?]
Could 3. Lewis Powell, Sr., have been the Lewis Powell formerly of
Onslow and Duplin Counties, NC, as theorized by Rev. Silas Emmett
Lucas, Jr., a Powell family historian, and author of THE POWELL
FAMILIES OF VIRGINIA AND THE SOUTH, (C) 1969, 1977? Records of Duplin
Co., NC, indicated Lewis Powell was dropped as a Justice of the Peace
in 1760 because he had departed Duplin Co. Records of Lewis Powell,
Sr., of Cumberland County, NC, begin in 1772 or earlier. But Lewis
Powell, Sr., of Cumberland County, NC, was purported to have married
Rebecca Field, according to DAR applications of descendants. Can
anyone help to solve this perplexing puzzle?
