Susan & Robert:

I could not find a connection with the VININGs I know of, but am including
the information below (what little there is genealogically...) in case you
can use it someday. If you should know of any descendants of this line,
please let me know - my signature line tells why...

Leroy "Lee" VINING (b. Indiana - d. 26 April 1863, Aurora, Nevada) -
Reportedly was born of Quaker parents in Indiana. Ex-Texas Ranger and
Mexican War veteran, along with his brother Thomas VINING. The VINING
brothers were members of the Mariposa Battalion, the first group of white
men to enter Yosemite Valley in May 1851. Leroy prospected for gold in the
region east of Yosemite, built and operated a sawmill. Mined at Mono
Diggings (north of Mono Lake) and Aurora, Nevada where he accidentally
discharged a pocket pistol which severed an artery in his groin. He bled
to death on the night of 26 April 1863.

The eastern entrance to Yosemite National Park passes through Leroy's
namesake - Leevining Canyon.
