Hello,
I know there were/are Zupancic in Indianapolis. I seem to remember a
Zupancic hardware store. They may have also run the bowling alley in
my grandmother's neighborhood (the "Slovenian neighborhood" called
Haughville.) I grew up in Indianapolis but have lived in Atlanta the
past 25 years.

My father used to talk about them alot. He is gone, but my uncle is
still living there and really keeps up with all the Slovenians. His
name is Bernard Trauner (Bernie) and his email is btra...@compuserve.com.
He's very friendly and loves to talk with other Slovenians, about Slovenia
(he's made several visits), doing geneology, etc. I feel pretty confident
in saying he'd love to hear from you with your questions about the
Zupancic in Indianapolis (he may know of the other names also.)

My mother grew up in Sheboygan Wisconsin and I always enjoy (?) visiting
the cemetary there -- going through all of the Slovenian names. I'm a
Metelko from that side. I think this must be a common name in Slovenia.
Maybe I'll go there sometime to find out!

Good luck.
Mary

Hi, Annie,

You are absolutely right. However, that's the information VJ Kaye
presents. He gathered his info from an assortment of sources, few of them
officially documented - that's not to blame him - he had little to work
with, and did a remarkable job with what was available. At least, in many
cases, his informatyion is a starting point.
So, his information needs to be double checked. I would strongly
recommend
it.

Bill,
Just caught your response to someone else on this newsgroup and hope
you can help me. I have been trying to begin my family history search
by finding out exactly where my grandparents were from. They say they
are Austrian (they spoke German) but were born in Czernowitz Romania. I
tried to find that in a modern day map and was unable. Then I located
it on an 1882 map that appears to put it in Romania at the time, but
today it seems to be the city of Cernovcy in the Ukraine. Is this
right? I will give you the particulars of my grandparents:

Neumann, Peter, born Mar 9, 1897 Czernowitz, Romania married to Marie
Yurkowski born Sept 8, 1901.

Peter's parents are William Neumann born November 1872 (not sure if
this is accurate) married to Josephine Kirsch born 1874 (again ?
accuracy of date).

Marie's parents are Joseph Yurkowski and Theresa Obertinski (birth
dates unknown).

I would truly appreciate any help you could give me. Also do you know
anything about something called the Carpatho-Ukraine Database of
Austrian Immigrants. I saw a reference to it on a website and don't
know much about it including how to get to it.

Thanks,
Karen C
