I have a few questions regarding counties in Slovakia. I have seen various
websites that mention Saris and Zemplin counties. Ihave not seen a map that
shows the exact area of these counties, but it would seem from what I've read
that Saris is in NE Slovakia and Zemplin is in the SE region. I have seen
Zemplinska in obituaries. Does this stand for Zemplin County?
I have various obituaries that list birthplaces as:
Parhovany, Zemplinska, Slovakia - Would this be the village of Parhovany in
Zemplin County?
Zemplinska Zupa, Stalic, Slovakia - What would this be? Is Zupa or Stalic the
village name?

Researching surnames: Radanovic, Savic, Mrovic, Stopnick(i), Owcarz/Ocarz,
Bugno, Vasko, Bus, Pavlik, Vajda, Chetsko, Bednar, Petruska
If you looked at a map of present Slovakia, Zemplin county would be in the
eastern most part of Slovakia. The northern part of Zemplin borders on the
Ukraine and Poland. The exception is that Ung (or Ungvarsky) county also
borders the Ukraine border and forms a pocket in Zemplin county that extends to
about Michalovce.
Saris (old Hung. = Saros) is just west of Zemplin and north of Kosice. Presov
is in Saris County but Kosice is not.
>I have seen >Zemplinska in obituaries. Does this stand for Zemplin County?
Yes. The Slovak word for county is "Stalica", thus Zemplinska Stalica would
mean Zemplin County. The old Hungarian spelling is "Zemplen"
>Parhovany, Zemplinska, Slovakia - Would this be the village of Parhovany in
>Zemplin County?
Yes. However there is no listing for Parhovany in the modern Slovak gazetteer.
It is probably the name of the village before 1918.
>Zemplinska Zupa, Stalic, Slovakia - What would this be? Is Zupa or Stalic
>the village name?
This one is confusing and is probably a typo error. It probably should read
Zemplinska Zupa, Zemplinska Stalica, Slovakia. There is no town listed in the
Slovak Gazetteer named Zemplinska Zupa or Zupa. This might have been the old
Hungarian name of the town, and after 1918 when some town names were changed
from the old Hungarian name to the Slovak name.
The word 'Zupa' (z with a hacek) means 'District'
or 'County' in England.
