Where is or was Ober Wikow? Plenty of references are made about people
being born there - but I can't find it. The Gazeteers at the library do not
mention it; I've done internet searches, checked the internet maps and
Genealogy websites. I'd like to know Ober Wikow's location and any other
information about that place, or where I can find that information.
Thanks!

Ober Wikow was in Bukovina and is now in Romania, according to my
references. I suspect it was not far from Unter Wikow. During Austrian
rule, both were in the Radautz Administrative district.

None of my references offer a suggestion as to map coordinates or the
current Romanian name, and I suspect the strong Romanianization under the
last Communist government may have produced a modern mane that does not
resemble the old one.

There is a map on microfilm at the US Library of Congress Map Collection
that might permit you to identify the map coordinates of the place. It is
an 1878 map of the Austrian Empire. You can write to the Library of
Congress Map Collection and they will, I understand make prints of the
portions you specify. There may be some fees involved.

The specific map is identified as Map Series G6480 S76 .A8 (1878 Edition)

The Radautz Administrative District stretched across Bukovina and covers
most of Square 4874 and 4875. It included the southwestern quarter of 4876
and slivers of 4774, 4775, and 4776. Scanning these pages would be a
difficult job, as the map is highly detailed and includes old style
indications of topography that can be confusing. But if you have no other
way, this is available. Give the map series reference and the 4-digit
numbers for the particular squares you want.

To figure out where you are with these maps, know the following:

Each square is half a degree of longitude wide and a quarter of a degree of
latitude high. Think of six squares laid out in two horizontal rows of
three each.

The northern edge of each square that begins with "48" runs along the 48th
parallel of north latitude; the southern edge along 47 degrees 45 minutes.

The northern edge of each square beginning with 47 runs along 48 degrees 15
minutes north, and the southern edge abuts the squares beginning with "48"

So the "47" squares make a row above the "48" squares.

Square 4774 is just west of 4775, which is just west of 4776, and the same
for the "48" series.

The west edge of squares 4774 and 4874 is at 42 degrees 30 minutes East
longitude as measured by the Austrian Imperial System. To convert to our
modern longitude, subtract 17 degrees 40 minutes.

Hope this is of some help.

There is a reference that it is 8 miles from Chernovtsy and 20 miles from
Bistritz. I could not find it on a map as well.
