I have stored my genealogical data in Family Tree Maker and have had no
problems, but am about to begin writing a genealogical document in Word 6.
I have transferred info from FTM notes successfully using clipboard, and
have even transferred trees the same way. The trees end up in a separate
window, but seem to print OK.
Now, the dates of birth, death, locations, marriages, etc. are all stored
on the Family Pages, and I cant find, in the manual, a way to copy them to
my Word document. It's a bit discouraging to think of retyping all those
facts into the individual notes sections for transfer.
If anyone knows a simple way to make the transfer, one family at a time, I
would be grateful for the help. Thanks.

My suggestion is to print to a text file, and then include the text
file into MS Word.

Thanks Eric, and others who replied as well. So far I have tried one
method that has worked (copying an Outline Descendent Tree to clipboard
and pasting in Word), and I have a few other suggestions to try as well.

Install a printer of type "Generic Text" and connect it to a FILE:
port. This is done differently depending upon which version of
windows you are using.
If you are using W95:
- Go to the Start menu/Settings/Printers
- Select "Add a Printer"
Now the "Wizard" will ask you if it is a local printer, or a network
printer. Select Local.
Now it will ask you for a driver. Click on "Generic" in the
Manufacturers column, and you should see a "Generic / Text Only"
selection in the Printers column.
You may now be asked for you W95 kit, I don't know, since I already
have the driver installed.
Now you can select a port. If you select FILE: you will be prompted
for a file name whenever you print to this "printer".
The process is similar under Windows 3.xx, but I don't know the exact
steps.

I can't say about FTM, but in Family Gathering, which I use,
you print to an RTF file (rich text format) and import it
into MSWORD for any further editing, if necessary.
By using RTF I can retaing the formatting created by
Family Gathering.

Ann,
I think it depends on what version of FTM you're using, With ver 3.4,
you can use copy and paste to transfer just about anything from FTM to
Word. Just highlight what you want to copy, type Control-C, and then go
to Word, and paste it in place (Control-V). You can generate custom
reports, containing just the information you want to assemble, and copy
and paste that information also.
If you have an older version and it won't let you do this, it's worth
upgrading for this feature alone.
If you have any problems with this, send me an e-mail and I'll try to
help.

Copying and pasting to end up with editable text will work from any Report,
the Outline Descendant Tree, in any of he new Genealogy Reports. The other
views in Family Tree Maker (including the graphic trees and Family Group
Sheets) copy as graphics.
I hope this helps.

Thank you Paul, and others.
I have had the best luck with Outline Descendant trees. They copy and
paste well, and end up a bit jumbled but all the info that I want is
transferred to Word. I don't know just how to edit Reports. They are so
wide that it would take me some time to figure out how to make them fit an
8 1/2 by ll sheet, rather than the wide format.
So many people took time to post and to send e-mail replies to my query. I
appreciate the helpful suggestions, and am able to get on with my document
with very little delay. Thanks again to all!

Paul,
I purchased the Starter Bundle II and in using the Family History
Collection CD # 113 I found a biography that I would like to have a copy
of for my own personal use. I have not been able to figure out how to save
it and open it up in a wordprocessor so that I can print it out. Anything
I have gotten so far has been incompatible with both WP and Microsoft
Works.
Any suggestions?
