Hello,
I am looking for the country of origin for my ancestors
named Vitatoe. They lived in Oklahoma, having come from Kentucky
and before that, Tennessee in the late 1700's. I have heard that
the name might have been derived from the Italian for life, "vitto".
Any information will be helpful. Thank you.

Dorothy,

My wife's ancestor was an Issac Vittito, born in Italy, married an
Eliza Jane Hines, and had at least on child Adeline Vettito (note
name change) who married Willie Tom Oakes.

There seems to be relatively few Vitatoe, Vittito, Vettito surnames
in the states and I suspect they all are indeed related to a common
Italian ancestor.

Would be interested in sharing research.

BTW, it does seem that the main concentration of this surname is
in Kentucky. Hope someone in this part of the family is a genealogist,
it would indeed be interesting.

Good luck on your searches...

Ken

I'm a Vitatoe through my Father. He ( Stephan Andrew Vitatoe ) was born in Roane County, Rockwood Tennessee in March of 1948. His parents are Arval and Thelma ( Abston ) Vitatoe. My Father told me that our ancestors originated in Milan, Italy with some found in Venice. He said the meaning behind our name is " Vitality, Life " . Some of my family also lived / settled in Kentucky.... Though my Grandparents lived in Rockwood for most if not all of their lives.

From Ancestry.com

Vitatoe Name Meaning Origin unidentified. Many origins have been
proposed, none of them convincing. Variants include Vititoe, Vittetoe,
Vittitoe, Vittitow. PD names not helpful. IGI no help. Website has much
speculation but no facts - pwh. The best contribution says: "Yes I have
heard of the migration from Emmerich, Germany to Holland (Netherlands)
then to I believe VAŠ I have heard that the name is French, Italian,
German, Spanish, you name it. I do know that a particular line spelt
Vidito hails from Dutch ancestry and that the Veteto Line is the line
from Emmerich.

Of course, another derivation could be vietato, which is Italian for forbidden!

My husband’s family name was originally Vitatoe, but it got changed along the way after his great great grandfather served in one of the world wars and was nicknamed Vitto for short and it stuck once he came back to New Iberia, LA where the majority of his family still resides.

Hello, greater Veteto related family... My mom was Ellen B. Veteto, from the Horse Branch, Kentucky family. Maybe some of you remember her if you attended Veteto reunions? When I was 14, I started to visit my grandfather's (Paul) younger brothers - Roscoe, Oscar and Lark Veteto and I also remember a great aunt Dee. Anyway, I did one of those new DNA tests and on my mother's side of the family, here are "famous" people the Veteto family has as ancestors (and yes, there is Dutch and Italian ancestry:

Nicolaus Copernicus!, Empress Maria Theresa of the Holy Roman Empire and Queen of
Hungary!,Napoleon Bonaparte!, Queen Victoria!, Warren Buffett, SusanSarandon.
