EMMANUEL ROUSE OF RHODE ISLAND

1673-1739

Richard Gammons Rouse*

1. EMMANUEL ROUSE*, b. ca. 1673 and d. 15 Jun 1739 at Smithfield,
Rhode Island. His trade was that of a cooper. (Smithfield, R.I.
Council Book #1) He may have married (1) ? Anne Harris on 2 Feb
1693/4 (IGI) at Clyst Hyden (north of Exeter), Devon , England. There
is no further information on his first wife. He married (2) 13 Sep
1711 at East Greenwich, R.I. Sarah (Long) Langford, widow of Thomas
Langford (Vol 1, Genealogies of R.I. Families, NEHGR, p. 51 &
Shotwell's Ancestors, p. 46). Luther Sawdey Rouse wrote on 25 Jul
1897 from Belle Plaines, Wisconsin, that his "great grandads family
came from old to New England soon after the Pilgrim fathers founded
Plymouth". (Letter written by Luther Sawdey Rouse to his son Parker
Sawdey Rouse. The original letter is in the possession of Robert
Rouse of Saratoga, Ca., hereafter called Letter 1897).

The General Court of Trials records indicate that Emmanuel Rouse of
East Greenwich, R.I. shall separate from his wife. This event
happened in 1719. The following is quoted from the court record:
"ATT A GEN COURT OF TRYALS AND GEN GOAL DELIVERY BEGUN AND HELD AT
NEWPORT THE LAST TUESDAY OF MARCH ... 1719. WHEREAS SARAH ROUSE THE
WIFE OF EMANUEL ROUSE OF EAST GREENWICH IN THE COLONY OF RHODE ISLAND
HAS (BEFORE THE JUDGES OF THE GEN COURT OF TRYALS) SORN THE PEASE
AGAINST HER D/S HUSBAND FOR THAT SHE WAS AFRAID HER D/S HUSBAND WOULD
TAKE AWAY HER LIFE. AND SHE BEING DULY EXAMIN'D AND THE CAS
CONSIDERED THE JUDEGM'T OF THIS COURT IS THAT SHE SAID SARAH ROUSE
MAY LIVE SEPARATELY BY HER SELFE FROM HER HUSBAND SHE MAINTAINING HER
SELFE WITHOUT ANY CHARGE TO HER D/S HUSBAND UNTIL THEY CAN MUTUALLY
AGREE BETWEEN THEMSELVES, OR RECEIVED FURTHER ORDER FROM LAWFUL
AUTORITY. AND THAT D/S EMANUEL ROUSE SHALL HAVE NO ACCON--- IN ANY
COURT WHATSOEVER AGAINST ANY PERSON THAT SHALL ENTERTAIN HER DURING
SUCH TIME OR AFORES/D. THIS COURT DISSOLVED" (General Courts of
Trials Vol. A, 1671-1724, A:296 as abstracted from LDS record
0945807) 07

Clement Weaver of East Greenwich was directed to pay Emmanuel
Rouse damages on appeal to the General Court of Trials on the first
Tuesday, March 1719. (General Court of Trials, Vol A, 1671-1724,
A:296).

* A second theory is that Emmanuel (Manuel) Rouse was the son of Lt.
Col. Thomas Rouse of the Barbadoes (Thomas Rouse will, Barbadoes
Archives written 9 Mar 1677 and probated 1 Dec 1679). who was the
"son of John Rouse formerly of New England" (Drake's History and
Antiquities of Boston, 1856, page 353) Mamuel is called a negro boy
that "waits on my said wife". Thomas Rouse at one time was part owner
of Shelter Island, N.Y. a haven for Quakers. (Thompson's History of
Long Island page 364) He was either the brother of John Rouse,
Quaker, of Rhode Island or John Rouse who resided in Marshfield, MA.
John, The Quaker, wrote 7 Nov 1657 challenging Governor Endicott to a
free discussion of Quaker faith. (Ensign, page 59 as noted in a
footnote of The Quakers in the American Colonies by Rufus M. Jones,
London, 1911).

This theory has been advanced by Mrs. Diane (Rouse) Ostrander of
Ohio. Her research led from "circumstantial" evidence that Manuel was
probably freed at the age of 21 (a practice encouraged by the
Quakers). He then made his way to Philadelphia, PA., where he may
have married Mary Jackson 13 Apr 1748). There is also a land record
in Lancaster County, PA. that involves Emmanuel Rouse
dated 1739. This must be another Emmanuel Rouse as Emmanuel Rouse of
Rhode Island died 15 Jun 1739. The information submitted by Mrs.
Ostrander connects with the marriage on 13 Sep 1711 of Emmanuel Rouse
and Sarah (Long) Langford). Undoubtably there are connections between
families as they probably came from the Cornwall and Devonshire area
in England.

Following the death of Emmanuel Rouse in 1739, Zachariah Rhodes of
Smithfield, R.I. purchased on 13 Apr 1741 from the estate 97 acres of
land with dwelling house in Smithfield, R.I. (Smithfield, R.I. deeds
Vol 2, page 18 & Genealogy of Rhode Island Families, Vol 11, page
104).

The Land Evidence books indicate Emmanuel was an extensive land owner
in the East Greenwich, R.I. area:

Emmanuel may have had other children. James is also mentioned in his
fathers will (Smithfield, R.I. Council Bk. #1, Will dated 11 May
1739). He married first Elizabeth Andrews. His first wife died
ca.1740. The name Elizabeth appears in the Town records (W.
Greenwich, R.I., 20 May 1789, Land Record H, p. 177).The will of

this family line).
