Which DNA test, for Genealogy, is best? I'm male, & Ancestry just
offered, at random, an autosomal DNA test for $9.95 to some 10,000
of its members. I think the cost was shipping.

Which test is best, Y33, Y46, or the Autosomal test?

Also a distant cousin sent her father's Y test 67 marker test.
Where can you find a cheat sheet to be able to read her Father's
test?

I suggest the 67 marker test. If you know your Haplo group the
autosomal, as I understand, is unnecessary.

I am Haplo Group R1a1 - various studies show my ancestors were in
Eastern Europe or Western Asia (the Steppes) and went to the
Scandanavian countries. From there they probably went to England
and Ireland.

R1b Haplo Group (the sons of King Milesius) went to Spain and to
Ireland. Sullivans are both Groups but R1b is much larger.

Google Haplo Groups - I know just enough to be dangerous.

Family Search is a bit expensive but they notify one of matches and
the tests for a surname are available. You haven't learned much if
you have to contact every person who tests to find if you matched.

familytreedna.com has an FAQ page that you may find useful.

I had their 37 marker DNA test, hoping to find some connections
further back than my g-grandfather. Sadly, I've found no one else
with the same ancestry who has had DNA testing done and published -
even in a namesake group. I'm more likely to find a 12 marker
match in Europe or Asia than in North America. That's not
surprising as there is much commonality in everyone's distant past.

My problem will be that, even if I find someone who matches, I have
the line further back than he does.
