Thanks in advance.

In version 10, you would put your cursor on the name of the person
you want to delete, then go to the people menu, and select delete
individual. This will remove the person and any information about
that person from your data.
If you don't have a people menu in your version of FTM, go to the
help menu and search for delete people.

Google may be your friend.
I searched for

Delete the -marriage-, not the spouse.

There are several ways to create what I called a phantom spouse when
I asked the question.
To make this person completely disappear; goto to the family view
with the husband and the unknown spouse.
For each child; select a child --->select People ----> Fix Relationship
---->Detach Child.
Once the last child is detached from the couple the unknown spouse
disappears.
Per what I was told this works for several versions of FTM (I use
FTM Ver 16.0.350 2006)

Hi Bob,
Go to the unnamed spouse, and give this person the exact name of the
correct spouse.
Go to the People menu again, and select merge specific people.
Merge the 2 people with same name.
Hope this helps,
Lisa

It usually hangs around if there's other info on that page such as a
child or a date. Make sure that everything is deleted. If there's
any children, it will always show as "spouseless" simply because a
second person had to be there to make the child.

Sorry, I got a little busy -- and then it turned out the box on
which FTM was installed has retired to a nice cool basement and the
FTM manual has vanished, so I can't even check this.
However -- if it's not in the HELP file, it is my recollection that
if you select the marriage field and try to edit it, the option to
delete it appears. I KNOW it does in the three programs currently
installed on my computers, and in at least one otherprogram (which
is on the retired computer as well).
Lisa's suggestion to simply merge the nameless spouse and the named
one has merit. (g) The only drawback might be, if both "marriages"
have children, the children might duplicate, but you could always
merge them too ...

Hi Cheryl & Bob,
I understood from an earlier message that Bob had removed the
children from this spouseless marriage. If they have not been
removed they will duplicate also, just as Cheryl said, and you will
have to merge them too.
If the children are still there, Bob, try this.
From the family page with the guy and the spouseless marriage,
select a child. Go to the People Menu. Select Fix Relationship
mistakes. Then choose Detach Child. If there are several children,
you will have the option of removing all of them at once. The
spouseless marriage might go away on it's own, after the children
are removed.
[However, I thought I understood that the children were deleted
which is what caused the spouseless marriage in the first place]
In the future, use the People menu choices to fix relationship
mistakes.
If the spouseless one is still ther, go back to my first suggestion,
which was to rename the spouseless person with same name and date
info of the correct person, and merge them.
Just so you know, I am not just guessing about what to do. I have
had to make several spouseless relationships go away in my own
database.
