That is PRECISELY what I see in New Jersey deeds as well. Many
years ago when I first began my research, I was told this was to
prove the wife had not been coerced by her husband. This doesn't
mean property couldn't be sold without the wife's consent (as
someone previously noted and I mentioned also) but if it was, there
would be an encumbrance -- the sale wouldn't be free and clear.
