The legal system in most the states of the US was based on English
Common Law.

Until 1974, Louisiana was an exception, and it's system was based on
the Code Napoleon (don't ask; I don't _know_ why it was based on a
French legal system that didn't exist when it quit being French).

The question arises -- Hawaii was never under English/British rule,
so on what is their legal system based? That sort of brought up the
matter of Alaska which was once Russian -- is their state legal
system English or Russian or what?

Inquiring minds had waaaay too little to do yesterday ...

Alaska is English since territorial times. Only things the Russians
left behind are natives with Russian names, and Russian Orthodox
Churches.
