It seems like recently I am seeing more and more bad links when
doing genealogy research. Other if they do go to something it is
not what I want but at a search page on rootsweb.ancestry.com.

Has anyone else noticed this or is this just the sites I am
visiting?

When at rootsweb.ancestry.com am I missing something in finding
these lost links.

Many of the USGenWeb
http://usgenweb.org/
sites have moved their information off of Rootsweb. I know ILGenWeb
moved to
http://ilgenweb.net/

Keith

I think you will find that most genealogy sites are owned by
ancestry.com or at least sponsored by them.

But I don't _think_ who sponsors 'em is really Keith's issue.

What I've been seeing is: I goto the Poke county GenWeb, which used
to be at rootsweb.com ... the index page for Poke county comes up,
and I click on "Biographies" -- And I don't get a Poke county GenWeb
site, I get a page with Ancestry banners that says "The file is not
on this server maybe we can find something similiar if you fill in
this search box."

A lot of GenWebbies apparently hard-coded their internal links
instead of using "relative" links, and since users.rootsweb.com/
SWGenWeb/Polk/bio.html no longer exists under that routing, we get a
Not-Here.

There are hundreds of 'em -- and for volunteers who have a life, a
day-job and more than one site, it's been a massive task to make
check your links! There are a number of these "broken" links on my
own pages ... I've been busy or sick and haven't gotten to 'em.
Maybe by Bastille Day ...
