Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage, 2 (1912): 115-116 (sub Benhale) has a good account of
the life of Sir Robert de Benhale, Lord Benhale. Regarding his
marriage, the following information is supplied:

"He married, before (1342) 16 Edward III, Eve, usually said to have
been widow, but apparently only mistress, of Sir James Audley, widow of
Sir Thomas of Ufford, and before that of Thomas Audley, and daughter
and heiress of John de Clavering [2nd Lord Clavering], by Hawise,
daughter of Robert de Tibetot." END OF QUOTE.

Similar information is given regarding Sir Robert de Benhale's marriage
in Complete Peerage, 3 (1913): 276, where it is stated that Eve de
Clavering "married, 3rdly, Sir Robert de Benhale, who was summoned to
Parliament 3 April 1360, but never after, and who survived her." END
OF QUOTE.`

In Thomas Barrett-Lennard's well written article entitled "Some account
of the Manor or Castle of Horsford," in Norfolk Archaeology, 15 (1904):
267-292, he says the following regarding the date of Eve de Clavering's
marriage to Sir Robert de Benhale:

"I am unable to fix the date of Eve's last marriage, which was to Sir
Robert Benhall, but it must have been in or previous to the year 1335,
as there is an entry in the Account Rolls of the Priory of Carhow for
that year which refers to her as then being Lady 'Benhale.'" END OF
QUOTE.

Likewise, there is a Suffolk fine dated 11 Edward III (1337-1338) which
involves Sir Robert de Benhale and Eve his wife:

"20. Elizabeth de Burgo v. Robert de Benhale, chevalier, and Eva, his
wife, in Ilketleshale and Spectishale" [Reference: Walter Rye, A
Calendar of the Feet of Fines for Suffolk (1900), pg. 184].

Elizabeth de Burgo who was the other party in the fine above is
Elizabeth de Burgh, lady of Clare, which person was the grand-daughter
of King Edward I of England.

In summary, it appears that Sir Robert de Benhale and his wife, Eve de
Clavvering, were married in or before 1335, as indicated by the Account
Rolls of the Priory of Carhow cited by Mr. Barrett-Lennard.
