Does anyone have the ancestry for Alexandra de GARDINIS who married ca. 1300
Sir John GIFFORD? NEHGR 75:59 says that she was the great grandaughter of
the Norman house of De ARSIC, but I can find nothing on them or for the de
GARDINIS family.

Thanks for your help.

Hi David,

Thank you for your response. I seem to have the same problem, with some
messages not being received.

How may I obtain a copy of this article? Our Genealogical Society, as only a
few back issues of T.A.G.

Thank you again, and I appreciate your help.

The ancestry of Alexandra de Gardinis, wife of John Giffard can also be
found in Paget's Baronage, family no. 8 (Arsic) which briefly runs as
follows:

01. MANASSER ARSIC, of Coggs, Oxfordshire, living 1103; m. unknown.

02. ROBERT ARSIC, of Coggs, died before 1160, married unknown.

03. MANASSER ARSIC, of Coggs, Warden of Dover Castle, 1165/6, Sheriff of
Oxfordshire 1160-3, living 1166, but dead in 1190/1; married Margaret.

04. ALEXANDER ARSIC, of Coggs, dead in 1202; married unknown.

05. ROBERT ARSIC, of Coggs, succeeded his brother John, died shortly
before31 Jan 1230; fought in Poitou 1214; joined the Barons against King
John; attended the King at the siege of Bitham Castle, 1221. Married
Sybil, daughter of Robert de Crevequer.

06. ALEXANDRA ARSIC, married Thomas de la Haye. Alexandra died shortly
before 14 Aug 1267.

07. ALEXANDRA DE LA HAYE, aged 22/24 at mother's death and already wife
of William de Gardinis.

The Victoria History of the County of Oxford, vol. 6, p. 291-292 for the
manor of Somerton picks up from here when William de Gardinis died in 1287
the manor went to his son Thomas de Gardinis, who died 1328, leaving his
estate to his grandson, John Giffard, son of Thomas's daughter Alexandra,
wife of John Giffard 'le Boef' of Twyford, Buckinghamshire.

I have a Sir John Giffard in my database and am wondering if it is the same person or how they might be related. He was (according to this info.) born circa 1232 of Brimsfield, died 29 May 1299 in
Boynton, Wilts., married to Maude de Clifford, daughter of Walter de Clifford (d. 1263) and Margaret Verch LLEWELYN (dau. of Lleweln Fawr).

Thanks for any information.

Carolyn-

I, too, thought it was reasonable to assume that a John Giffard listed
in one place as born "about 1235" and died "about 1300" was the same as
another born "about 1232" and died on 5-29-1299. However, it appears
they are not, according to a lengthy article in NEHGR Vol. 75, pp
129-130 (and before and after)by G. Andrews Moriarty. According to the
article, they are uncle and nephew. The first is the Sir John Giffard
Le Boef who was the son of the third Elias Giffard, of Twyford,
Buckinghamshire, and whose son John married Alexandra de Gardinis. The
second was a John Giffard who was grandson of the fourth Elias Giffard,
and grandson of the third Elias. This second John Giffard is listed on
p. 62 of Vol. 75 of the Moriarty article, and described as "John, aged
16 years at his father's death in 1249; m. (1) Margaret Neville; m. (2)
Matilda Longespee". "Maud" de Clifford, according to line 29a, gen.29
in the 7th edition of Weis' "Ancestral Roots" married first William
Longespee III, and second Sir John Giffard of Brimsfield. So that
apparently makes "Matilda Longespee" the same as "Maud (de Clifford)
Longespee".

Hope this makes things clearer!
