Hello,

The Complete Peerage (III: 568) states that Margaret Russell, wife of
George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland, was born "7 or 8 July 1560, at
her father's house in Exeter." However, the exact day of her birth can
be determined from a note (presumably for the purpose of casting her
horoscope) in the diary of the astrologer John Dee which reads as
follows:

"1560. July 8th, Margaret Russell, Cowntess of Cumberland, hora 2 min.
9 Exoniae mane." [1]

Thus, it would appear that the countess was born on July 8, not July 7.

Sincerely,
Kelsey J. Williams

Just a wild enquiry.

There were Quaker Irish Russells from early
years -about 1660 on. I am descended from several of
these Irish Quakers who intermarried, and one was from
the Quaker Russells, though how I am not certain yet..

Since several of my ancestral Irish names also came
from Cumberlandshire [Cumbria] [a strong early Quaker
county] can anyone help me with RUSSELL history of any
these families going into Ireland?

Thanks for any help

Barrie Wright
