Leo van de Pas once asked me to post this line. Unfortunately I've been quite busy these days and couldn't look for the proper book yet. What I have here is from a standard publication which has so far exhibited no major mistakes - the minor ones are easy to correct.

D. Whyte, _Scottish Surnames and Families_, Birlinn/Barnes & Noble, 1997, p. 74ff.

Forget about the legend of Maurice of Hungary, which he quotes anyway. I think it should be more thoroughly explored, but I don't have the necessary scholarship. Whyte points out that the Drummond coat of arms is the same as the Oudenarde's coat of arms, a Flemish family, and that Leslies and Livingstons share with the Drummonds similar family legends (Hungarian origins).

Family name comes from the lands of Dromyn or Drymen, in Stirlingshire, which they once held.

Family starts with:

1. Malcolm `Beg' Drummond, documented in the late 13th century. Children:

- Malcolm (II), follows.

- Gilbert, probably killed at Dupplin in 1332.

2, Malcolm (II) Drummond (recorded as Malcolmo de Drummond) had issue:

- John; follows.

- Maurice, coroner of the earldom of Lennox.

- Margaret, who first married Sir John Logie and then King David II of Scotland.

3. John Drummond, `of Concraig,' had issue:

- Malcolm (III), who had a permission from Robert III to build a stronghold in the lands of Kyndrocht;

- Sir John, follows.

- Annabella Drummond, Robert III's Queen and ancestress of the later Kings of Scotland.

Sir John Drummond married Elizabeth Sinclair and had Sir Walter Drummond, ancestor of the main Drummond line, and John Drummond, who settled in the Madeira. Elizabeth Sinclair's actual parentage is a minor problem; I believe her to be the daughter of Sir Henry Sinclair and Lady Egydia Douglas. John Drummond of Concraig is said to have married Mary, heiress of William Montfichet, mentioned during the Bruce/Wallace crisis. Finally there is mention of an early Stewart marriage in the first two generations.

FWIW, Alison Weir makes Malcolm II Drummonds's wife (mother of Sir
John and Queen Margaret) an unnamed Graham.
