In looking through the gen-med archives for information about the parentage of Anne Cavendish, I could find no conclusive evidence that Anne was indeed an illegitimate child of Henry Cavendish, son of Bess of Hardwick. A post reported that Anne was not listed as a child of Henry in "The Cavendish Family" by Francis Bickley (1911). Does anyone have a reliable source that confirms Anne's parentage? I would so like to have the redoubtable Bess of Hardwick in my ancestry! Thanks for any information you can provide. Polly Zashin

Burke's peerage 106 Ed (1998) under Baron Waterpark (who also descended
from Henry Cavendish) confirms what you say:

Anne m Vicent Lowe, of Denby Old Hall and had issue, but Anne's mother is
not named.

Unfortunately Burkes typically gives no source and as you may be aware, is
littered with errors, but as this is a recent addition to previous editions
(which generally did not recognize illegitimate issue) it is probably
accurate

There was a session on the Cavendish children of Henry Cavendish in early
1999 that I have a part of, but not all of the comments. His wife was
Grace Talbot, but all of the children were illegitimate, and in no
instance, as I recall, is the mother known. What I have is dated 2/9/99,
titled "Anne Cavendish, one of my gateway ancestors". I have the cites
some place, but it's not where I thought it was.

Hello Polly,

The parentage of Anne Cavendish is given in Faris' Plantagenet Ancestry
(2nd edition, 1999). I can check my copy for you later, if you need a cite
for the source(s) Dr. Faris used.

I am currently looking to confirm a connection with this family myself, in
that Benjamin Rozer was married to Anne Sewall, one of the daughters of Henry
Sewall and Jane Lowe (later married to Charles Calvert, Lord Baltimore). If
you by any chance have information concerning the parentage of Notley Rozer
and the other issue of Benjamin Rozer, it would be greatly appreciated.

Again, let me know if you need the citation from PA.
