In 1061, and still a minor, he became Count of Holland and Bishop
Willem of Utrecht, profiting from this minority by annexing the
county of Holland to his already extensive bishopric of Utrecht.
It would take until 1076 before Dirk V, assisted by his step-father,
Robrecht the Friesian, Count of Flanders, recovered his territory
and imprisoned the Bishop of Utrecht in the process.
