Is the ancestry of Philip Mowbray, governor of Stirling Castle at the time of
the battle of Bannockburn, known?

I've looked through my copy of "The Edinburgh History of Scotland" vol. 2 by
Nicholson, I've have read through many web sites on the subject, I've googled
both the archives of this group and generally on the internet, and have come
up short. There is complete agreement that Philip Mowbray (generally not
referred to, apparently, as Philip de Mowbray) was the governor, and his
famous pact with Edward Bruce to delay the surrender of the castle is well
documented. I just can't figure out how he connects to the larger Mowbray
family. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Don Duncan

Dear Don,

I have not found a direct link between the English and Scots
Mowbray (or Moubray) families; possibly another example of the
many disconnected, vs. the few (Bruce for one) where the connections
are known. Following is what little I've developed concerning the
descent and relationships of the Moubrays of Barnbougle, &c.

The most intriguing individual to me is Sir Roger de Moubray
[1.1.1.1.1.2.2 below], who had a dispensation to marry Margaret
de Abernethy in 1313. Whether the marriage occurred or not, I
do not know. The relationship between this family and the
Abernethys is not resolved - possibly a relationship through the
Comyns. Should anyone have a solution (conjectured or otherwise)
as to this relationship, I would be glad to hear of it.

Cheers,

John

I have these parents Robert and Margaret as m AFT 9 Sep 1361. Margaret
Graham's just previous husband John Drummond of Concraig was yet living in May
1360. So Janet above cannot have been older then ten in 1372.

It would be interesting to try her chronology in further descent, some of
these generations have very large year ranges.

Dear Will,

Exactly so. The text of the marriage contract for David de Loen
and Janet Stewart can be found in Fraser, The Red Book of Menteith II:
258, and is dated 20 July 1372. Not sure if this is accessible via
Google books; however, my notes clearly show Janet was identified as
Robert's legitimate daughter by Margaret Graham; ergo, this was a
marriage contracted by the parents for two minors. Murdoch Stewart is
usually accorded a birthdate of 1362; if this is true, Janet was born
in 1363 or later.

Cheers,

John
