Dear Newsgroup ~

The authoritative Complete Peerage, 5 (1926): 712-715 has a good
account of the life history of Gilbert de Clare, Knt. (died 1314), Earl
of Gloucester and Hertford. Regarding his wife, Maud de Burgh, the
following information is provided:

"He married 29 September 1308, at Waltham Abbey, in the presence of his
uncle the King, and earls and barons, Maud, daughter of Richard (de
Burgh), Earl of Ulster, by Margaret, daughter of Sir John de Burgh, of
Lanvalley ... His widow had livery of her dower in various counties 5
Dec. 1314, and her dower was adjusted 2 Nov. 1318. She is mentioned
again in 1319, but died in the following year, 1320, and was buried in
Tewkesbury Abbey at her husband's left side."

In footnote "a" on page 715, the following sparse information is
provided regarding her death date: "On 11 August 1320 the executors of
her will are mentioned (Cal. Close Rolls, 1318-23, p. 323)."

Recently I located a record which shows that "Lady Maud, who was the
wife of the nobleman, Sir Gilbert de Clare, late Earl of Gloucester and
Hertford," was living as late as 4 July 1320, when she presented to the
church of Bletchingley, Surrey [Reference: Francis Joseph Baigent, ed.,
The Registers of John de Sandale and Rigaud de Asserio, Bishops of
Winchester [A.D. 1316-1323] (Hampshire Rec. Soc. Ser.) (1897):
324-325].

Thus, it would appear that Maud de Burgh, Countess of Gloucester and
Hertford, died sometime between 4 July 1320 (when she presented to the
church of Bletchingley) and 11 August 1320 (when her executors are
mentioned).

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
