Complete Peerage 2 (1912): 46 (sub Beauchamp of Kidderminster) states
that John Beauchamp, Lord Beauchamp of Kidderminster, married "between
1327 and 1373" Joan daughter and heiress of Robert le Fitz With. The
wide date for the marriage of John and his wife, Joan, is owing to the
strange mistake made by the editor of Complete Peerage of collapsing
the life and career of John Beauchamp (husband of Joan Fitz With) with
that of his father, John Beauchamp, Sr., of Holt, co. Worcester, which
matter was discussed in an earlier thread on the newsgroup.
A more exact date for the marriage of John Beauchamp and Joan Fitz
With is indicated by an item found in Descriptive Catalogue of Ancient
Deeds, a copy of which item is presented below. The indenture
concerns the Fitz With inheritance in cos. Oxford and Warwick.
Deed A. 9265.
"Indenture leading to the uses of a fine to be levied by William
Tiryngton, and Joan his wife, to John Beauchamp, of her dower in the
manors of Wykyngton [Wigginton], Weston [South Weston] and Ardele
[Ardley], co. Oxford, and Bobenhull [Bubbenhall] and Schotteswell
[Shotteswell], co. Warwick, for 20l. rent, to be further secured to
her on his manors of Holt, Hanle [Hanley] and Twychene [Twitchen] and
his lands, &c. in Worcester. Westminster, Thursday, All Hallows eve,
44 Edward III [1370]. French. Copy.) [Reference: Desc. Cat. of
Ancient Deeds 4 (1902): 407].
As we can see above, John Beauchamp has agreed to provide dower for
his wife, Joan's mother, Joan, then wife of William Tirrington, out of
the Fitz With estates. John secures his mother-in-law's dower by his
own lands at Holt, Hanley, and Twichen, co. Worcester. This agreement
can only have posted John Beauchamp's marriage to Joan Fitz With. As
such, it appears that John Beauchamp and Joan Fitz With were married
before 31 October 1370. This date agrees well with the birthdate of
their son and heir, John, who was aged 10 at his father's death in
1388 (or born about 1378).
Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
