I was given the following ancestry of my husband, but with no "proof," much
less any references or sources. I have looked through several books and
have not found Brockwell Yscitheor mentioned. Could anyone suggest
references? Also on the Carew line?
1.
Mardudd
to Madog
to Brockwell Yscitheor, Prince of Powis (or Brockwell ap Brochwd, Cadell,
Powys) [to me the "ap" would indicate that the father of Brockwell
couldn't be Madog]
to a daughter that married a Prater of Eaton Water, Wiltshite, possibly
Guilliumus Prater
2.
Tewdwr - King of South Wales
to Rhys ap Tewdwr, King
to Nesta who m. Gerald of Windsor, the Kings "Lord" in Wales
to either Sir William de Carew or a dau. who married Sir William
to Sir Maurice of Carew
to Sir Nicholas, Lord Carew / Carew Castle
to a daughter that married a Prater of Eaton Water (and supposedly the
grand-daughter of Brockwell Yscitheor above)
Thank you

This material is circulated by Mr. Gary Benton Prather of Sulphur,
Oklahoma, to correspondents descended from Thomas Prather, 1622 emigrant
to Virginia. As far as I'm concerned, this material is unsupportable.
The identity of the Virginia immigrant Thomas Prather as the Thomas Prater
who was baptized at Saint Mary's, Marlborough, Wiltshire on 26 December
1606, son of Thomas Prater, gent. The best source on this family (and one
which much of Mr. G. B. Prather's material seems to have been drawn from)
remains John William Prather, _Prathers in Wiltshire, 1480-1670_
(Hendersonville, North Carolina, 1987), though that, too, presents the
immigrant's connection in a more optimistic light than is supportable.
The Wiltshire Prather ancestry, as given by J. W. Prather, cannot be
demonstrated to go back to these early Welsh notables, though Jeff Duvall,
another occasional contributor to this list, has noted another possible
significant noble descent in the Wiltshire Prather ancestry. Perhaps he
can restate it for the list.
Finally, note also that if you descend, as I do, from Jonathan Prather of
Maryland, that his identity as son of Thomas Prather of Virginia is
equally as speculative as Thomas' as son of Thomas Prater, gent., of
Wilts.

This first sentence should end "... is only conjectural."

Tewdr Mawr (the Great) (d.1077) was not a Welsh Monarch, though his son, Rhys,
was King of Deheubarth (SW Wales). Their ancestry can be found at:

They descend in the male line directly from Rhodri Mawr (the Great), King of
Gwynedd, Powys & Seisyllwg in the late 9th century. His ancestry can be found
