Thanks to Douglas Richardson's publishing the correction as to
Anne, wife of Sir William de Ferrers of Groby, co. Leics., the
following gives the 'new' descent from William "the Lion", King of
Scots (via his son Alexander II) to the emigrant William Farrar.
Obviously, there is a host of other 'new' descendants of King
Alexander II, including Prince William.

reference in a record concerning the Abbot of Dunfermline:
' ROBERT, LORD ABBOT OF DUNFERMLINE, RESIGNED (A.D. 1251).-The Lord
Abbot of Dunfermline appears to have been “implicated in the plot of
trying to get the bastard daughter of King Alexander II., the wife of
Alan Durward, Justiciar of Scotland, legitimized, that she might
succeed to the throne, in the event of the death of the boy-King,
Alexander III.” Feeling that he had done wrong, and having had some
misunderstanding with the monks, he resigned his office of Lord Abbot
of Dunfermline, and also his seals of office as Lord Chancellor of
Scotland, and retired to Newbottle, where he assumed the attire and
position of a monk of that Abbey. About the year 1269 he was elected

evidence as to her marrying (2ndly) Sir William de Ferrers:
Sir William de Ferrers (husband of Anne) received the manors of
Woodham Ferrers and Stebbing, Essex, and the capital messuage of
Chiche and Fairsted to hold of his father and his heirs by the service
of five knights' fees, 12 Dec 1251. Importantly, he had livery of
these lands ca 1256, but then ***he exchanged them with his mother for
lands in 'Galloway and Scotland', including Leuchars, co. Fife [CP Vol
V, p. 343n]. He received these English lands back from his mother
prior to her death, Feb 1280/81 [had livery of same, 11 May 1281], but
I would take his interest in the Scottish lands of his mother, and
esp. their location in Fife & such as a VERY CLEAR indication of a
Scottish connection. Note that his wife Anne was the Countess Dowager
of Fife.

' Since the above material has turned up, I've consulted with
Andrew
B.W. MacEwen, of Maine, the resident expert in all things Scottish.
Mr. MacEwen stated he recently had correspondence with Professor
Duncan regarding the very charter cited as evidence by Scots Peerage
which suggests that Anne, wife of Earl Colban, was the daughter of
Sir
Alan Durward. Having obtained and reviewed a full transcript of the
charter (which is privately held), both Mr. MacEwen and Professor
Duncan are convinced that Anne, wife of Earl Colban, was in fact the
daughter of Sir Alan Durward.
"Colban, earl of Fife, and his wife Anna, probably Alan Durward's
daughter, granted the land of Glensalauch in the Mearns, which they
held of Alan Durward and Alan held of the king, to Magister William
Wishart,...'
The grant in question was made with the consent of Earl Colban's
wife,
Anne, which implies that this property was part of Anne's tocher or
maritagium. As stated by Hammond, the property was held direct of
Alan Durward, and he held it of the king, which makes it virtually
certain that Alan Durward was Anne's father. The charter was
witnessed by the king and also by Alan Durward himself.'14

actually be the daughter of Henry de Ferrers (shown here as her
brother)23. Douglas Richardson cited evidence supporting the
placement as dau. of Sir William de Ferrers, as in 1352 John de Hotham
granted Ann and her brother, Thomas de Ferrers, knt., the castle of
Kilkenny and other estates in Ireland for life, with remainder to her
son, Hugh le Despenser.
