Here is an interesting linkage from Keats-Rohan's "Domesday People".

Gilbert I de Gand (p 210) from Ghent in Flanders
m. Alice dtr of Hugh de Montfort
father of Emma, wife of Alan de Percy
dtr who married Ivo de Grandmesnil

succeeded by his heir, Walter, c. 1095

William Fitz Nigel (p 486)
William appears related to Walter de Gand as he described him as "nepos
meus" VCH Lancashire i, 298.

Maybe this William is from Flanders and that is why people don't know
who he is! Maybe everyone is looking in the wrong place?

Also, the web site below links Hugh Lupus with William Percy as coming
together with Wm. the Conqueror in 1067. And Dugdales Monst. Ang. links
Hugh Lupus with bringing William fitz Nigel to Cheshire and making
grants to him. So, seems like there could be a relationship here. Does
anybody have any thoughts on this?

When I pointed out the stated relationship between William FitzNigel and Walter
de Gand before the publication of DomesdayPeople, her conclusion was that the
connection must obviously be through the de Montfort family.
