Faris mentions (on p. 252) that Dorothy and John (above) had a grandson
John Alston, baptised at Pavenham, co. Bedford, on 25 Feb. 1668, who was
"probably" the emigrant to St. John's Parish, Berkeley Co., South Carolina.
Faris also mentions another grandson of Dorothy and John, also named John
Alston, baptised at Felmersham, co. Bedford, on 31 Dec. 1673, who "may have
been" the settler of that name in Chowan Co., North Carolina.
In other words, there was a John Alston who was descended from Edward I,
and there was a John Alston of North Carolina, and they may have been the
same person (but then again they may not).

I had Joan of Acre born in 1272 (and married in 1290) the daughter of
Edward I and of (E)Leonor (died 1290, daughter of (San) Fernando III),
rather than of Edward's second wife, who I have marrying him in 1299 (she
being younger than Joan). Is that wrong? When was Margaret born?

The Alston line in North Carolina was definitively identified by Adelle Harper
Bartlett before 1973. Her research found ship passages, wills, Bibles and etc.
that positively identified John Alston, baptised at Felmersham, co. Bedford, on
31 Dec. 1673, as the settler who "may have been" the settler of that name in
Chowan Co., North Carolina.
See her book: Title: Adelle Bartlett Harper's family lines; a Loving Tribute to
Our Southern Heritage Author(s): Harper, Adelle Bartlett Published: Atlanta,

How does one "positively identify" someone who "may have been" ?
It is apparent then that Faris didn't know if it was or wasn't the same person;
hence he wrote; "may have been."
At this point, we have positively identified the individual in question through
Wills, Baptismal records, collateral family connections, and documents, land
grants, etc. as definitely being the same John Alston that Faris referred to.
Therefore the statement: "may have been" the settler of that name, has been
researched, and the researchers and I are confident that he "definitely was"
the settler of that name.

I didn't bother with the early parts of the line, as presented by
<n3...@aol.com>, mostly because he was asking for his "latest (most modern)
ancestor" listed there, and not about the validity of the entire line.
There are other errors in that line as well (Edward Cherlton's wife is
wrong, it's usually "Ingaldesthorpe" not "DeInglethorpe", etc.).
If you bring your source to the attention of Mr. Faris, he might be willing
to change his description of that descent in the next edition of his book

This is certainly correct.
Joan was born in Acre (hence her name) where Edward and Eleanor were on
Crusade. They were on the way home later that year, visiting Eleanor's
half-brother, Alfonso X el Sabio, when news arrived of the death of Edward's
father, Henry III.
Margaret herself was about the same age as Joan.
Jean Coeur de Lapin
Joan of Acre, born in 1272, was seven years older than Marguerite de
France.
