According to Simon Payling's *Political Society in Lancastrian England: The Greater Gentry of Nottinghamshire* (1991), Simon Leek (d. 1420s) of Leake and Cotham, Notts., was married to Joan Talbot, daughter of Sir John Talbot of Swannington. Payling indicates that Simon Leek and Joan Talbot were married ca. 1405. Roskell, in *The House of Commons 1386-1421*, mentions that Simon Leek's wife (Joan) was the cousin of a Walter Prest of Melton Mowbray. This same source (i.e., Roskell) has an entry for James Bellers (d. 1421) of Melton Mowbray that indicates that he was the son of Sir James Bellers (d. ca. 1411) of Ab Kettlby and his first wife Lettice Prest (d. bef. 1377), daughter of an earlier Walter Prest of Melton Mowbray and that his sister was Elizabeth (Bellers) Talbot. Can anyone confirm that Sir John Talbot of Swannington was the husband of this Elizabeth Bellers?

Roskell also states that the Bellers of Ab Kettleby were an offshoot of the Bellers/Belers of Kirby Bellers. Can anyone on the list provide any information on this connection?

Thanks,

Thanks for the information. In looking through the archives of Gen-Medieval I
found a message from Brice Clagett which indicates that at least one of the
possible reconstructions of the Talbots of Bashall includes a marriage between
a Thomas Talbot of Bashall and Elizabeth Bellers, daughter of (Sir) James
Bellers and Lettice Prest, who would (assuming that is the correct
reconstruction) be ancestors of Elizabeth Talbot, wife of John Stanhope (d.
1493) of Rampton, M.P.

This still leaves open the question, however, of what the connection is
between Joan Talbot, wife of Simon Leek, and the Prests since Roskell
indicates that she (i.e., Joan Talbot) was able to prove (in a dispute over
the estate of Walter Prest of Melton Mowbray) her claim to be among the heirs
of Walter Prest. Was Alice Moton, identified by Douglas Richardson as the
wife of Sir John Talbot of Swannington (and, I assume, mother of Joan Talbot)
a relative of the Prests of Melton Mowbray? Can anyone identify Alice Moton's
parents? I know what Sir John Talbot's parents are identified by online
sources (for what that's worth) as Philip Talbot and Elizabeth Fiene (or
Fiennes?), and what little I can add to their ancestry doesn't indicate any
obvious link to the Prests...

Thanks.

Jeff
