I have been trailing through the archives looking for information
about the children of Sir John Sulyard (Sulliard) and came across what
may be conflicting information.

Thomas, brother of these Tirrel sisters, m Margaret d of Sir John
Sulyard
of Wetherdon, Suffolk. She m2 Sir Anthony Browne of Essex, another
Browne
family for which I also have quite a few generations - but from
Burke's I
think.
From the above, we have three children of Sir John Sulyard and Anne
Hungate, Edward, Elizabeth and Anne and a fourth daughter of Sir John,
Margaret whose mother is not disclosed. However, Faris says Elizabeth
married Sir Edward Baynton while the Visitation has her marrying John
Garneys. Did she marry twice, first to John Garneys and then to Edward
Baynton? Or is this a different Elizabeth? And where does Margaret fit
in? Is she the daughter of this Sir John Sulyard or another one and
who is her mother?

I have now had a look at Testamenta Vetusta where the will of Lady
Elizabeth Andrews appears. She was the mother of Anne Andrews, the
second wife of Sir John Sulyard. In that will (dated 18 October 1474)
she mentions various Sulyards:
"the residue of my goods, &c. after the payment of my debts, &c. I
bequeath to my two daughters, Elizabeth, the wife of Thomas Wyndesore,
and Anne, the wife of John Suliarde. And I make and ordain my
executors John Suliarde, Thomas Wyndesore, Elizabeth and Ann their
wives..."
"to my daughter Anne a crimson gown single, and a furr of grey, and a
single gown of velvett and furr of white; to Andrew Suliard a pair of
beads of gold; to Ann Suliard, my daughter's daughter, a girdle of
green, harnessed with silver ..."
I have also had another look at Faris PA2 (Baynton:3 and Ludlow:7)
which mention the daughter Anne who married Roger Appleton and the
daughter Elizabeth (II) who married Edward Baynton and states that
John Sulyard and Anne Andrews had two sons and three daughters.
From the above, it appears that Edward and Elizabeth (I) were the
children of Agnes (Anne) Hungate, while Anne, Elizabeth (II), another
2 unnamed sons and another unnamed daughter were the children of Anne
Andrews. I don't think the Andrew mentioned in the will is a son, I
suspect he is John Sulyard's brother. From the will it is possible
that only Anne was born by the time her grandmother died, although it
may be that she was the only one old enough to leave adult clothing
to.

Just a couple of points on the children of Anne Sulyard:
Regarding Elizabeth Apiltun (or Appleton) who married Henry Elham of Elham
in Crayford, there is a possible, though unproven, descent to the Harman
family of Crayford, discussed on this group in a recent thread "Spurious
bastard child of King Edward IV?"
Regarding Henry Apilton (or Apulton, Appleton) who married Margaret Roper;
by their son Roger they had a grandson William whose marriage or marriages
have been the subject of some doubt, with Mary Fisher perhaps being a second
wife in sucession to another Mary who died three months before their
marriage. I recently went over the Crayford registers in some detail. It
appears that around the time of the marriage of Mary Fisher and William
Appleton the registers were not written up regularly. Subsequently blocks of
baptisms, marriages and burials were entered in the register. As far as I
can tell, the history of Mary Fisher is:-
Baptised 17/8/1561, Crayford (d. of Thomas Fisher and Jane Fowler)
Married William Appleton 22/5/1581, Crayford.
Buried 6/2/1581-2, Crayford. (as Maria Appleton wife of Willm Appleton
gent.)
So the apparent two wives called Mary were one and the same person, the
burial and marriage entries being out of order and the matter not helped by
the old style dates.
