Does anyone have information on the family of Count Nicholas Bouton,
born about 1580 in France? His son John immigrated to Connecticut.

Tristan, Ah know ya'll weren't thinking tacky thoughts about Texas,
were you?:)

Oops, forgot to check a branch, there is a Nicolas BOUTON, ct.de Chamilly, b.28
Jul 1598, d.Oct 1662, m.1622, Marie de Circey dau.of Benigne/ Marie Jacquette.
No son Jean is listed, but ref.is seldom complete.

This Nicolas was son of Herard BOUTON m.1593? Anne Brulart.

Herard was the son of the previously mentioned Jacques Nicolas BOUTON and
Claudine de Moroges, dame de Chamilly.

There's more on the ancestry, if you think that this is your BOUTON family,
let me know.

This is the Nicholas mentioned by some Boughton researchers, and a Huguenot
connection has been mentioned by most. The few Huguenot resources I have
consulted say John Bouton can not be documented among the Huguenots.

I have Nicholas with sons Herard, John and Noel (whose portrait is said
to hang at Versailles).

John was 20 when he came in 1635 from Gravesend to Boston on the "Assurance".

In my files I have:
NOTE: It is supposed that this John Boughton is the same whose father was
Nicholas Boughton because it is known that John Boughton did emigrate to
America and there is only this one John Bouton on the English Registry of
emigrants from 1600-1700.

I'm waiting for the next "The Great Migration Begins" to see if they get
to the Boughton/Boutons.

That confirms the family that I sent to you (Nicolas sons Herard and Noel are
also in Dictionnaire...). From your reply, I assume that you have everything
that you want.
All French immigrants were not Huguenots.

Best wishes,

Where is DSH when we need him!

This Bouton connection, which appears in James Boughton's _Bouton-Boughton
Family_ has been thoroughly debunked. For a brief sketch of the family
see Jacobus' _History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield_, and
for a lengthier one see Vol 3 of _Washington Ancestry_ pp489 ff. The
debunking can be found in NEHGS Vol 51 (1897) especially pp 333-4, and
the note by Jacobus in TAG vol 11, pp 116 ff. See also Wm. A. Boughton,
_Bouton, Boughton and Farnam Families_ 1949. No Huguenot nor other French
connections seems justified. We must learn to check documentation, con-
sistency and likelihood of our secondary sources. James Boughton's material
is both undocumented and incoherent on its face. Caveat emptor!

There has recently been some Bouton material printed in either TAG or
the NEHGRegister. If I can find which one, will post.

The January 1998 issue has articles on two different Bouton families.

A New Look st the Family of John (4) and Mercy Hickok Bouton of New
Canaan Ct which is continued in the April 1998 issue.

The Huguenot Ancestry of Jean/Johann Daniel Bouton of Philadelphia.

I will try to answer questions about either article.
