I am seeking information about the parents of Catherine Doria, married
around 1330-1340 to Antoine Grimaldi, seigneur of Prat, of la Vallée,
and of Lantosque, all land he held from Queen Jeanne of Naples by a
letter dated 20 October 1348. As you probably know, Grimaldi is a
famous name in the south of France. I understand that Doria is also an
important surname in the Genoa area of Italy. I am hoping that one of
you could direct me to a source that covers the Doria family. (Perhaps
someone named Francisco Antonio Doria might have special insight into
this problem.)

Also, I am familiar with Natale Battilana's _Genealogie delle famiglie
nobili di Genova_ (1971) and I hope to get it through interlibrary loan.
I suspect it does not have a solution to this problem, since my friend
working on this same case found nothing. I just want to read through
the book for date on the other families I am related to from Genoa.
However, I am curious to know if anyone has an opinion of Angelo M. G.
Scorza's _Le famiglie nobili genovesi_ ([1924] 1973). Is it worthwhile
getting it on interlibrary loan? Does Battilana cover the same
material? Is Battilana more thorough, accurate, and up-to-date than
Scorza?

Thank you.

I'm going to take a look at it - but if you say that Battilana doesn't have it, I will only be able to suggest hypotheses, as B. is my main source.

I have no Italian Dorias' original (or facsimile) copies of documents. I have a good collection of documents on the Brazilian Dorias, which I've been carefully compiling over the last years, since a friend of mine, Victorino Chermont de Miranda, lambasted me for not doing so and said that I should write a decent family history - or family memories would be forever lost.

Right now I'm on a search for first-hand evidence about the Dorias in Portugal; there are a couple of documents here in Rio (brought over by King João VI when he moved to Brazil), but I haven't seen them yet. Miguel de França Doria (Torre Bela) is also interested in this search.

Best,

Chico Doria

I haven't seen Scorza, but I doubt that Battilana is more up-to-date, as it
was originslly published in the 19th century and reprinted in 1971.

Two questions:

1> Old Doria.
Do you have any basic info (birth/death date..) on Valentina Doria and his
father Bernabo' (died 1327?). Any picture?

2> More recent Doria
Do you have the similar info for:
- Carolina Doria, born ca 1810, married ca 1826 to Vitaliano d'Adda
(Nobleman from Lombardia)
- Marcello Doria, Marquis, born ca. 1830 Genova, died 1894, married ca
1856 to Carolina d'Adda-Salvaterra (Collateral branch of the previous one).

Any other Doria linked to Visconti/Sforza or married in Lombardy would be
interesting to me.
Thanks a lot. Lorenzo Carcano

How does Andrea Doria [1466-1560] the famous Genoese statesman,
admiral and *condottiere*, who had the ship named after him, fit in
here?

No pictures, unfortunately. But I'm going to check those old-Doria dates
for you and come back soon. Have you seen Spreti for the more recent ones?

(There was a very beautiful Italian lady called Donna Selvaggia Borrommeo
d'Adda. Selvaggia = Savage. She was in her twenties c. 1964. Any pictures
of her? ;-))

A link I know is through Brigida Spinola, who was descended from the
Visconti, and married Pietro Doria in the last quarter of the 15th
century. (WAR communicated it to me, thanks.) See Battilana, Doria, table
5. There may be others, I'll take a look at them.

Spencer,

Wait for my next long post. I'll tell something about him. (The
reference: Battilana, Doria, table 26).

Just a question - I'm going to check it later anyway - but shouldn't it
be ex tridente scientia?

Congratulations, Chico! It's good to see that someone is paying
attention!

No, it's 'Ex Scientia Tridens' in honour of Admiral Andrea Doria
[1466-1560], your kinsman perhaps. There are additional clues here.

All Best Wishes,

Spencer
