I have been reading the archives of gen-medieval on Rootsweb back to 1995
and the marriage of William Fortescue b. abt. 1345 d. aft. 1409 and
Elizabeth Beauchamp b. bef. 1349 d. aft. 1410 has been much discussed.
However I have not seen a sourced pedigree of William Fortescue, does anyone
have one?
Also, I have a descent from William and Elizabeth above through to Hugh
Fortescue d. 1 Aug 1600 who married Elizabeth Chichester d. 7 May 1630.
Crucial aspects of this are from Vivian so having read much of the
discussion on sources I am aware this is highly suspect. Still I would
appreciate if anyone can show where I'm going wrong. My two best guesses for
bad data are John Fortescue who marries Elinor Norries not being the son of
William and Elizabeth and also Martin Fortescue who marries Elizabeth
Densell looks like a ring-in.
Still with all those caveats, here it is:

You are correct that Vivian's Visitations of Devon is often wrong.
But, in the case of your specific Fortescue line, I believe it is
sound. All the same, I suggest you check the Fortescue genealogy in
print written by Lord Clermont which should provide you with the
particulars for each generation.
The documentation for the first three generations of your Fortescue
descent was published in the 7th edition of Ancestral Roots by Walter
Lee Sheppard. Those generations are shared by the New England
immigrant, Agnes (Harris) (Spencer) Edwards, of Connecticut, from whom
I descend.
I trust this answers your question. Best always, Douglas Richardson
