I saw a posting dated May 19, 1998, from Richard Borthwick, stating that
he had a 15 generation table of the ancestors of Sir Leonard Hastings
including notes and sources. I would be interested in seeing that
information if it wouldn't be too much trouble. Thanks in advance.

This is the updated/corrected ancestor list which I posted in May.

1 Sir Leonard HASTINGS, of Kirby. Died Oct 1455.
Leonard was heir of his brother Richard who died in 1437.
[CP VI:370; VCH Yorkshire NR I:559]

2 Sir Ralph de HASTINGS, of Kirby Muxloe, Leics. Died 1397.
Sheriff of Yorkshire 1377. He also inherited Burton Hastings, Caldecote and
Drakenage in Warks from his uncle Sir Robert de Herle.
[VCH Warwickshire IV: 40, 107; VI:57; VCH Yorkshire NR I:559]

3 Matllda.
The traditional pedigrees all agree that the wife of Sir Ralph was 'Maud' or
'Matilda', but there seems to be no agreement as to her identity.

4 Sir Ralph de HASTINGS, of Allerston & Slingsby. Died 1362/63.
Sir Ralph acquired three parts of Slingsby manor, Yorks, in two lots, 1343
and 1359/60, from the Wyvyll family. He was Sheriff of Yorkshire 1337 &
1340, constable of Pickering Castle and keeper of York Castle. He died of
wounds received at the Battle of Neville's Cross.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22; VCH Yorkshire NR I:559]

5 Margaret de HERLE.
Sister & heir in her issue of Sir Robert de Herle (d.1364). Robert acquired
Drakenage and Burton Hastings, Warks.
[VCH Warwickshire IV: 40, 107; VI:57; Cal. of Inq.p.m. Vol.9 (Edward III)
#39; ibid. Vol.11 (Edward III) #589]

8 Sir Nicholas de HASTINGS, of Allerston. Died ? 1315/1316.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II: 421-22]

9 Agnes. Died 1322.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II: 421-22]

10 Sir William de HERLE, of Caldecote, Warks. Died 1347.
William was a lawyer. He became a serjeant-at-law and in 1320 a judge of the
common pleas and knighted. He was appoint chief justice of the common pleas
4 Feb 1327. There were two periods when he was replaced (1329-31, Nov 1333)
but he resumed office and finally retired at his own request 3 Jul 1337.
William remained a member of the king's council for the remaining ten years
of his life.
[VCH Warwickshire IV: 40; VCH Leicestershire IV:429-30; DNB IX:699]

11 NN
DNB makes her Margaret POLGLAS but it is chronologically most unlikely for
her to have been married to 10. Nichols says that she was Katherine daughter
of a Humphrey de Beauchamp. This may be correct but no evidence is given.
[VCH Warwickshire IV: 40; DNB IX:699; J Nichols *History and Antiquities of
County Leicester* IV/II:627]

16 Sir Hugh de HASTINGS, of Allerston. Died 1302.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22]

17 Beatrice. Died After 1300.
The only evidence to hand for Beatrice being the wife of Hugh and the date
of her death is the traditional genealogy.
[J Nichols *History and Antiquities of County Leicester* III/II:607]

20 Robert de HERLE. Died After 1320.
Robert was summoned for military service 1301. He bought the manor of
Caldecote, Warks in 1304. He settled this propert of his son William and
daughter-in-law in1320
[DNB IX:699; VCH Warwickshire IV:40]

32 Sir Nicholas de HASTINGS, of Allerston. Died 1279/1285.
Nicholas, a younger son, received Allerston from his mother. His elder
brother, Thomas, inherited the family lands of Crosby Ravensworth in
Westmorland. After Thomas's death Nicholas inherited the Westmorland lands.
Nicholas also held Gissing in Norfolk.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22; CP IV:58]

33 Emmeline. Died After 1300.
Emmeline wife of Nicholas was not the daughter of Walter de Heyron as given
in the traditional genealogy recited by Nichols. She has been confused with
her granddaughter Emmeline de Heyron daughter of Walter de Heyon who married
in 1284 Alice de Hastings.
[CP IV:58 note (d); J Nichols *History and Antiquities of County Leicester*
III/II:607]

64 Thomas de HASTINGS, of Allerston. Died Before 1247.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22]

65 Amice.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22]

128 Hugh de HASTINGS, of Gissing, Norf. Died Before 1203.
The traditional filiation for Hugh is usually as son of Thomas de Hastings
son of William de Hastings or as Hugh son of the aforesaid William. The
early generations of this family are confused and obscure. All that CP says
is that this Hastings family was a branch of the family that became earls of
Pembroke and that the branching occurred prior to the generation in which
Sir Henry de Hastings (of the Pembroke line) married Ada de Huntingdon).
There may be something to be found in the transmission of the fee for
Gissing in Norfolk and Crosby Ravensworth in Westmorland.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22; J Nichols *History and Antiquities of County
Leicester* III/II:607; IV/II:447; CP VI:370 note (b)]

129 Helen de ALLERSTON.
Heir to her grandfather, Torfin, in Allerston, Yorks.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22]

258 Alan de ALLERSTON. Died Before 1189.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22]

259 Alice. Died After 1231.
In 1231 Alice quitclaimed her dower in Allerston to Thomas de Hastings (son
of Helen) and to his eldest son Thomas.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22]

516 Torphin de ALLERSTON, of Allerston. Died 1176/1189.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22]

1032 Ughtred de ALLERSTON, of Allerston. Died Before 1167.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22; VCH Yorkshire II:183-85]

2064 Gospatrick de ALLERSTON, of Allerston. Died 1100/1109.
Gospatrick was living in the time of Henry I. His son Ughtred held Cayton
and Allerston in the time of Abbot Serlo of Whitby (ca.1090-1109). This
would suggest that Gospatrick died after 1100 and before 1109.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22; VCH Yorkshire II:183-85]

4128 Gospatrick de ALLERSTON, of Allerston, Yorks. Died ? After 1086.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22; VCH Yorkshire II:183-85]

4129 NN
NN is said to have been the daughter of Dolfin son of Thorphin.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22; VCH Yorkshire II:183-85]

8256 Aschil, King's Thegn. Died After 1069.
[VCH Yorkshire NR II:421-22; VCH Yorkshire II:183-85]

8257 Siegrith.
Siegrith was the widow of another Archil son of Fridegist and of earl Eadulf
of Northumberland (d.1040). It is not clear whether she was the mother of
Gospatrick.

16516 Thorphin.
[VCH Yorkshire NR: 421-22; VCH Yorkshire II:183-85]
