Hello Suzanne, et al.,

In a previous thread [1], I queried whether anyone of the list had
further documentation concerning the family of Bruce of Airth, co.
Stirling. Specifically, the question was as to the identification of the
wife of Sir Robert Bruce of Airth (d. ca. 1519) as a daughter of
Alexander Montgomery, Master of Montgomery (d.ca. 1470) and Catherine
Kennedy in Scots Peerage [2].

Major William Bruce Armstrong concluded a long-term research effort
with the privately published work, The Bruces of Airth and Their Cadets.
As he determined, the details in the secondary source (the 'Memorials')
used in Scots Peerage identifying this individual as 'Helen Montgomery'
and her spouse as 'Sir James Bruce' were in error, but the placement was
correct: in fact, the daughter's name was Euphemia, or Euphame
Montgomery, and her husband was the Sir Robert Bruce of Airth in
question [3].

This descent obviously includes additional lines from Charlemagne,
Henry I of England (via Robert, Earl of Gloucester), and several Magna
Carta sureties (incl. Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester). Amongst the
identifiable individuals whose ancestry is affected by the above:

1. Alexander Hamilton, emigrant to New York (ca. 1774),
Signer of the U.S. Consitution, 1st Secretary of the
Treasury (d. 12 July 1804)

2. Sir Patrick Houstoun, 5th Baronet, emigrant to Georgia
(1734), President of the Royal Council of Georgia (d. 1762)

3. Robert Livingston, emigrant to Boston (1673; later, New
York), of Livingston Manor; speaker of the New York
legislature, 1718-1725

~ and thereby, Presidents George H. W. Bush and George
W. Bush of the United States.

4. Daniel Roberdeau, emigrant to Pennsylvania (ca. 1742),
merchant, Brigadier General of the Pennsylvania Associators,
member, 2nd Continental Congress, Signer of the Articles
of Confederation (d. 1795)

Hope this is of interest.

Cheers,

John *

Dear Pat,

There are two 'traditional' known marriages for Robert _the_ Bruce:
that to Isabel of Mar (mother of Marjory), and the last, to Elizabeth de
Burgh, his Queen (and mother of David II).

There is the added marriage found by Douglas Richardson (see the SGM
archives), but that involved the FitzAlan family. Besides this and the
two marriages mentioned above, I am unaware of another other spouse of
the oft-married King Robert [although he did have a number of illegitimate
children].

Any chance the Vipont/Vieuxpont match you mentioned might involve
another Robert Bruce/de Brus?

Cheers,

John

Hello All,

The following is additional information with regard to the first post in
this thread.

A. The maritagium of Janet Bruce

As originally noted, Sir Robert Bruce of Airth and his wife Euphame
Montgomery had charters for lands in Baldorane as early as 1496 [1].

The account in SP for William Livingston does not directly address
lands received as the maritagium of Janet (or 'Jonet') Bruce, whom he
married under terms of a contract dated 16 October 1504 [2]. However,
the subsequent account of his career does state,

" He obtained possession of the lands of Baldorane by a charter
granted in his favour by Walter Stewart, dated 23 July 1524. " [3]

The lands of Baldorane evidently came to William Livingston as a
result of either prior agreement concerning his marriage, or due to the
death of Sir Robert Stewart and the administration of his estate. The
lands of Baldorane are next found in the hands of the 3rd son of William
Livingston and Janet Bruce, known as 'Robert of Baldoran' [4].

B. "The Bruces of Airth" and chronology

Maj. Armstrong did not have the benefit of access to Scots Peerage at
the time of printing his work in 1892. While in general, he did an excellent
job with the records at hand, he did rely on previous publications ["The
Bruces and Comyns", and "The Peerage of Scotland" by Douglas] that placed
Janet Bruce as the daughter of Sir John Bruce, and thereby as sister of Sir
Robert Bruce [5].

This was disproved by Balfour Paul, who noted same in the account of
William Livingston, citing "Protocol Book of James Young" and "Protocol
Book of John Graham" (the relevant entry from the latter being dated 21
July 1545) [6].

Hope the foregoing is helpful.

John
