In the 17th Century there were three generations of St. George heralds, of different order. First it was Sir Richard St. George (died 1635) (Clarenceux), then his son Sir Henry St. George (1581-1644) (Garter), and finally his grandsons (Henry's sons) Sir Thomas St. George (1615-1703) (Garter), Sir Henry St. George (1624-1715) (Garter) and Sir Richard St. George (born 1631) (Ulster). I find this noteworthy in itself.
The family's home was at Hatley Park in Hatley St. George in Cambridgeshire, where the family lived for centuries. In the local church here, there shall be a group of 15 shields painted for Sir Henry St. George the elder in 1627.
Some of these St. George's are connected to the published "visitations". Henry St. George, then Richmond herald, was involved in the visitations of Cambridgeshire in 1619. And I would suppose the family is mentioned in the visitations of that shire. (There are no example of this visitation in Norwegian libraries, so I have not consulted this, yet.)
Can anybody out there give me further informations about this family? My concern is the couple John Docwra and Ann St. George, allegedly a daughter of Thomas St. George of Hatley St. George. The couple were parents of Thomas Docwra of Putteridge in Offley, Cambs. (1519-1602) and Humphrey Docwra (1525-1565).
In a contribution to the "Continental genes" whim, Henry Sutliff says that a granddaughter of Sir John Hawkwood, the "condottiere", Mathilda Coggeshall, married John St. George, and their descendant was the above mentioned Sir Richard St. George, Clarenceux King of Arms.
As an apropos to another recent exchange of words on this list: according to Burke (25. ed. - a book that is available in Norwegian libraries) the first St. George in England, Baldwin, of course was one of the Conquerer's companions. I suppose that may be due to the contribution of one of the heralds in this family.

I am not sure how much you know of the St. George family, but there is a
concurrent thread which I have been posting on the Iwardby and St. John
families. Richard St. George, Clarenceux King of Arms, was married to
Elizabeth St. John of Lydiard Tregoze, Wilts. Her parents were Nicholas
St. John (d. 1589) and Elizabeth Blount (d. 1597). Nicholas was son of
John St. John (d. 1576) and Margaret Carew. This John was in turn son of
John St. John (d. 1512) and Joan Iwardby whose ancestry is the topic of
the other thread.
The most knowledgeable person on the St. George family is Mirabelle St.
George Hollingsworth of Exmouth, Devonshire. She does not use a computer
so if you are needing more information, I could give you her address by
private mail.
Hope this helps,
Henry Sutliff
