Dear Newsgroup ~
Two 17th Century New World immigrants, Agnes (Harris) (Spencer) Edwards and Margaret (Wyatt) Allyn, descend from William Fortescue, of Whympston (in Modbury), Devon, who died sometime before 1440. Both immigrants have numerous American descendants.
Hingeston-Randolph, Register of Edmund Stafford (1886): 275 states that William and his wife, "Matilda, alias Mabilia," and his parents were granted a license for an oratory in 1410 by Edmund Stafford, Bishop of Exeter for his father's mansion at Whympton (in Modbury), Devon. This record may be viewed at the following weblink:

Matilda is Latin for Maud and Mabilia is Latin for Mabel. Maud and Mabel are two different names. As such, the exact name of William Fortescue's wife has never been known.
Evidence that William Fortescue's wife was actually named Mabel is proven by a fine dated 1425, whereby Mabel's parents, John and Agnes Falewell, settled lands on themselves for life, with successive remainders on Mabel, wife of William Fortescue, and her heirs; George Denysyll [Densyll] and Agnes his wife and their heirs, and John Boson and his heirs. For an abstract of this important fine, see Chris Phillips' website at
http://www.medievalgenealogy.org.uk/index.html. Mabel's given name is also established by three later Common Pleas lawsuits cited below.
Mabel Fortescue and Agnes Densyll were evidently daughters and co-heirs of John and Agnes Falewell. John Boson, Esq., was evidently a nephew of John Falewell, which explains his inclusion in the remainders of the 1425 fine. John Boson, Esq., is a lineal ancestor of Anne Boleyn, Queen of England, wife of King Henry VIII of England.
That Mabel Falewell was an heiress is confirmed by Harleian MS 1567, fo. 46; Harleian MS 1091, fo. 58; Harleian MS 9, fo. 10v, all of which show Fortescue quartering the Falewell arms (available at British Library, London).
Following William Fortescue's death, his widow, Mabel, married (2nd) before 1440 (date of lawsuit) John Trumpyngdon, Gent., of Whympston (in Modbury), Devon. This marriage has never been noticed by any Fortescue family historians to my knowledge. In 1440 John Boson sued John and his wife, Mabel, acting as executors of William Fortescu, and two others in the Court of Common Pleas regarding a trespass. In 1450 John and his wife, Mabel, sued George Denyshull [Densyll] in the Court of Common Pleas in a writ of formedon descender regarding a half share in two messuages and lands in Ratley, Devon. In 1450 Joan Hille, executrix of John Boson, Esq., sued John and his wife, Mabel, "formerly the wife of William Fortescu" in the Court of Common Pleas regarding a debt. John Trumpyngdon, Gent., was living in 1468.
I've copied below my current file account of William Fortescue and his wife, Mabel Falewell. For further information on the ancestry and descendants of William Fortescue, of Whympston (in Modbury), Devon, please see my book, Royal Ancestry [5 volume set], published in 2013.
