Hi, I've made no headway trying to find out the parentage of John Savage, escheator of Dorset/Somerset in 1402-03. I've seen some secondary lit references to his being part of the Cheshire family but never any specifics which makes me doubt there's any truth to it. He married Eleanor Gouvis of the Gouvis of Tollard Royal (Tollard Gouvis) around that time or slightly earlier and thereby succeeded to their estates. I believe he served as escheator again in 1408. I've never found any reference to him on any family tree or in an IPM of his own family. Does anybody here know anything? Thanks in advance for your help.

In addition to the Savage family at Clifton and Rocksavage, Cheshire, there were Savage families at Bobbing, Kent and Bagginton, Warwickshire. You might want to check those families out if you have not already.

There is a book ' The Savages of the Ards' that might help you. Copies are available online.

Robert, thanks for the lead, which I was able to read online. Unfortunately just repeated things from Hutchins' Dorset, nothing about the Savages of Dorset prior to the mid-to-late 15th C. And nothing more about my John Savage from the early 15th C. And keeping stating that they're from the ancient Norman family but doesn't tell me how. Disappointing. But I appreciate you're taking the time to give me a lead, that was kind of you.
