Another ancestor of the 2nd Earl Waldegrave is Winifred Brooksby (born
1602; died 25 June 1672, buried St Peter Church, Saxelby,
Leicestershire) married 1615 (at age 13) to Sir Francis Englefield,
2nd Baronet of Wootton Bassett (born 1599; died 1 May 1656).

Leo has Winifred in his database here, but doesn't trace her ancestry
beyond the names of her parents:
http://www.genealogics.org/getperson.php?personID=I00060398&tree=LEO

She was descended from Edward III thru each of her parents as so.

Leo has Sir John Huddleston of Sawston Hall & Elizabeth Dudley
(Generation C6/D6 above) in his database here, so it should be fairly
easy to link up the rest & extend Winifred Brooksby's ancestry:
http://www.genealogics.org/getperson.php?personID=I00264586&tree=LEO

I've been fond of the Huddleston family since I first looked into them
in detail several years ago. Is this Princess Diana's only line to
the Huddlestons of Sawston Hall, or does she have them elsewhere in
her ancestry?

Cheers, --------Brad

According to my data, Jane Hudleston who mar. Sir William Wiseman (C9
above) had an aunt Anne (also of the Sawston family) who mar. Sir
Thomas Lovell of Harling, and descents to Diana can be traced from
this couple also.

The Sawston family is a branch of the family that originated in
Millom, Cumberland, and descents to Diana (and to Charles) can be
traced from other members of this family. It's unclear to me as to
whether the family's surname is spelled with one D or two. Recent
editions of Burke's LG have used one D, and I've followed that.

Brad,
Huddleston is a place - in the parish of Sherburn-in-Elmet, about 6
miles north of Pontefract. The de Huddleston family originated there.
One branch of the family moved to Millom, Cumberland, whilst the main
branch from Huddleston became extinct in the male line with the death
of Richard de Huddleston in about 1270. Huddleston descended through
Richard's daughter Beatrice to the family of de Meaux of Bewick. This
branch of the Meaux family also became extinct in the male line with
Sir John de Meaux who died in 1377. By this time Huddleston, with its
valuable quarries was in the hands of the family of Langton of York,
but whether by marriage or purchase is not entirely clear to me.
Huddleston descended in the Langton family until John Langton V who
died after 1467. He had married Agnes Sawley, daughter of William
Sawley of Saxton-in-Elmet and Huddleston seems to have gone to the
Sawley family and later their heirs - the family of Hungate.

Regards,
John
