Hello All,

The recent thread concerning the Farrar ancestry of Neil Patrick Harris brings up the matter of Mary, wife of Col. William Farrar (d. ca 1677). Some years ago in discussing the matter with a Farrar cousin, he noted his theory that she was of the Baugh family (vs. Pigott and numerous other surnames found on the internet). I suggested that she might be a daughter (possibly the only issue) of Thomas Baugh, known to have emigrated from England on the Supply in 1620 (arrived 1621) and resident on the 'College land' in 1624; he was identified in the Visitation of Worcester pedigree of the Baughs of Twyning (Glouc.) as being “absent in Virginia, 1634” [1]. This possibility was evidently mentioned to other relations, and voila! “Mary Baugh” (sometimes “Mary Pigott Baugh”) now appears in webpages from geni.com, wikitree and doubtless others. If any evidence has been found to date to support this theory, I’d be most interested in hearing of it.

That being said, the emigrant Thomas Baugh does have some interesting ancestry. In addition to the possible descent from the Earls of Arundel via Crocker of Hook Norton, Oxon. [2] there is an extensive range of medieval ancestry for Baugh’s maternal grandmother Margaret Newport, wife of Thomas Copley of Bredon’s Norton, co. Worcs. including a line from Edward I of England via Bohun, Talbot and Barre. One of the more interesting lines is the descent via Cornwall of Burford:

1. John, King of England = Isabella of Angouleme
2. Richard of England, King of Germany = NN (not married)
3. Sir Richard de Cornwall , of Thonock, Lincs. d. 1296 = Joan
4. Sir Geoffrey de Cornwall, of Burford, Salop. = Margaret de Mortimer
5. Sir Richard de Cornwall, of Burford, Salop. = Sibyl de Bodrugan
6. Sir Geoffrey de Cornwall, of Burford, Salop. d. 1365 = Cecily
7. Richard Cornwall, Esq., of Burford, Salop. d. 1443 = Alice
8. Sir Edmund Cornwall, of Burford, Salop. dvp 1436
= (2) Elizabeth Barre (desc. Edward I)
9. Sir Thomas Cornwall, of Burford, Salop.
= Elizabeth Lenthall [desc. Henry II]
10. Sir Edmund Cornwall, of Burford, Salop. = Mary Hoord
11. Anne Cornwall = Peter Blount, Esq., of Sodington
12. Elizabeth Blount = George Newport, son of William Newport
of Rushock, Worcs., dvp 1558/9
13. Margaret Newport = Thomas Copley of Bredon’s Norton, Worcs.
14. Eleanor Copley = John Baugh, son of Rowland Baugh, Esq.,
of Twyning, Glouc.
15. Thomas Baugh, emigrant to Virginia 1621

Cheers,

John

The ascent of Edmund Cornwall of Burford also includes France, Scotland and the curious case of Jean de Brienne the Latin Emperor of Constantinople, through his maternal grandmother Lucy Grey

Mr. Ravilious though this is not related to the topic, I saw in the archives that you have a royal descent from a king I don't remember can you post it here please I'm just curious.

Some sources seem to have the wife of Colonel William Farrar II [c.
1626-c.1676] as Mary Williams, daughter of John Williams and Mary Womack.

What do you make of that?

While I'm on here (concerning Aston), I would like to add that this Baugh family in Worcestershire were closely associated with and related to a constellation of families who settled in Henrico County, Virginia. I had exhaustively searched the probate records, and it became clear that there is an error in the published visitation, e.g., one brother is mistakenly credited with children, while they actually belong to another brother.

It is curious that some members of the families that belong to this constellation of families were crypto-Catholic, so presumably belonged to those who had Cavalier sentiments.

This line is of interest to me as I also descend from William Farrar (descendant of Edward III) and Mary (possibly Baugh?) through their son Thomas Farrar as does John Ravilious. I was not aware that the Baugh line had been proven to Edward I, but making note to view more posts on this.

I am interested in the Mary Womack, wife of John Williams mentioned in
Spencer Hines' reply. I supposedly descend from Abraham Womack and Sarah
Worsham of Henrico co., VA. Sarah is said to be a daughter of John Worsham
and Elizabeth Littleberry. How might Mary Womack Williams be related to
Abraham Womack?
