GENERATION 5 (nos. 10-14)

10. ALEXANDER CHAMPERNOUN. According to the 1422 IPM of his cousin, Otho
Champernoun, he was aged 40 or more and the son of Richard, son of Thomas, thus
was born in or before 1382. In 1405, Alexander Champernoun and Joan, his
wife, and the heirs of Joan's sisters, sued for the manors of Beer Ferrers,
Newton Ferrers and other lands in Devon and Cornwall (De Banco Plea Rolls,
Easter Term, 6 Hen IV, m. 308). In Feb 1416/7, Alexander Champernoun, esq.,
Sir John Cornwall, and Thomas Bonville, esq. presented to Beer Ferrers. In
1418, John Cornwall, Knt., sued Alexander Champernoun, armiger, for the next
presentation to the church of Newton Ferrers (De Banco Plea Rolls, Hillary
Term, 6 Hen. V, m. 415). Cornwall lost and in Feb 1418/9, Alexander alone
presented to Newton Ferrers (Stafford, p. 145, 149). He unsuccessfully
disputed the claim of his nephew, Richard, to succeed, despite showing that his
father had devised Ashton Rohant to the younger Richard and the heirs of his
body (VCH, Oxford, 8: 21). He died 30 June 1441 (IPM, 21 Hen. VI, no. 19) and
was buried in the Church of St. Andrew at Beer Ferrers (so stated in the will
of his son John).
By Nov 1384 he was married to Joan, daughter of Martin Ferrers and heiress
to Beer Ferrers (Cal. Close Rolls, 1381-5: 587-588).
Children:
15. Roger Champernoun.
16. John Champernoun, m. Elizabeth Bigbery.

11. JOAN CHAMPERNOUN. Died 1419. Vivian (p. 162) and Pole (Devon, p. 255,
256) both incorrectly call her the daughter of Alexander. At the inquisition
of proof of age of her son, Philip de Courtenay, held at Tyuerton on 12 Feb
1424/5, John Colle, a witness to the baptism, who was a servant of Richard de
Champernoun, kt. and was sent by him to Ashton to present the mother of Philip
with a silver cup, refers to Richard Champernoun as "father of the mother of
the infant" (Inq. 3 Hen VI, file 20 (50)). As the daughter of Sir Richard by
his 1st wife, the evidence may be found in Ashton Church wherein is a crest of
the Chudleighs under which are twenty-five coats of arms showing the various
matrimonial alliances of the Chudleighs. Included among them are those of
Champernoun and Astley (the latter being Azure, a cinquefoil ermine, RTDA, 31
[1899], p. 191-192, where it is identified as Ashley, but see CP, 1: 283, where
the Astley arms are thus identified). She married 1stly, Sir James Chudleigh,
died c1402; and 2ndly, c1403, Sir John Courtenay, who died before 1415 (CP,
4: 335).

12. RICHARD CHAMPERNOUN. He died 20 Jan 1419/20 seized of the manor, borough
and advowson of Dodbrook, the manor and borough of Modbury and advowson of the
priory there, the manor and advowson of Bridford, the manor of Bokeland Dynham,
and other lands, including 40 acres in Woodleigh (IPM, 7 Hen. V, no. 51). Pole
(Devon, p. 301) calls him the eldest son of Richard by his 2nd wife, Katherine
Dawbeney, from whom he received Woodleigh.
He married Isabel Bonville, sister of Sir William Bonville, 1st Baron
Bonville of Chewton (1391-1461). (Paget's Baronage, no. 80). Assignment of
dower ordered, 17 Mar 1420 (Cal. Close Rolls, 1419-22: 36), she was living 5
Feb 1421.
Children:
17. Hugh Champernoun, m. Alice Bois.

13. JOHN CHAMPERNOUN (de CAMPO ARNULPHI in his IPM), of Insworth. Died 2 June
1449 (IPM 27 Hen. VI, file 133 (7)). At his death he held no lands in
Devonshire or Cornwall.
He married Margaret Hamley, daughter of Arthur Hamley, of Halwyn, co.
Cornwall. Margaret was born 1409.
Children:
18. Richard Champernoun, m. Elizabeth Reynell.

14. MARGARET CHAMPERNOUN. Married c1419, Robert Hill (1392-1444), of
Shilston, Devonshire. Vivian (p. 162) places her as the daughter of Richard
Champernoun (died 1337), but this is clearly impossible as her son, John,
was born 29 May 1420, and several more children followed soon after. In
Vivian's pedigree of Hill of Shilston (p. 486), based upon the Visitation of
1580, she is simply called the daughter of Sir Richard Champernowne of Modbury
without any distinction as to which Richard is meant. Hill served as Sheriff
of Devonshire, 1428 and Knight of the Shire for Devon in 1442. He died shortly
before 12 May 1444 and on 18 Nov 1445 a commission was appointed to inquire
into his will. (History of Parliament, 1, p. 454)

GENERATION 6 (nos. 15-18)

15. ROGER CHAMPERNOUN. Born c1411, being aged 30 and more at the death of his
father. Knight of the Shire for Devon, July 1433 and Jan 1436/7 (Parliaments,
p. 324, 329). He was appointed Sheriff of Devonshire 7 Nov 1436 (Cal. Fine
Rolls, 1430-37, p. 252). He presented to Portelmouth Nov 1450 (Lacy, p. 355);
and to Beer Ferrers in June 1452 (Lacy, p. 369). He died 14 Nov 1461 and was
buried at Beer Ferrers (IPM, 5 Edw. IV, file 18 (48)). His estate
administration was granted to his brother John, 1 Dec 1461 (Lambeth Palace,
Bourchier Reg., p. 48). (Vivian (p. 162) incorrectly states he died 14 Nov
1422, which year should read 1461, notes he left a will of 1 Dec 1461, which
is an administration, and places his IPM in 5 Hen. VI, being 1426/7.)

16. JOHN CHAMPERNOUN. Born 1415 (aged 46 at the IPM of his brother Roger in
1461). He died 3 Apr 1475. At his death his holdings included the manor and
advowson of East Portelmouth, the manor of Bryxham, one third of the manor and
borough of North Tauton and one third of the Hundred of North Tauton, and more
than 300 acres in Modbury, Ludbrok, Avenmouth and Worthy (IPM 15 Edw. IV, file
52 (30)). His will of 20 Mar 1474/5 directed his burial in the Church of St.
Andrew at Beer Ferrers between the tombs of Martin Ferrers and Alexander
Champernoun, and named his wife Elizabeth, daughters Blanche and Joan, and his
nephew Thomas Champernoun (PCC Wills, Wallys 23).
He married Elizabeth, daughter and coheiress of William Bigbery. She
apparently predeceased him as in his will he asks a priest to celebrate for
seven years in the church of Beer Ferrers for himself and his wife.
Children:
19. Blanche Champernoun, born 1453, died 1480.
m. Sir Robert Willoughby (1452-1502)
20. Joan Champernoun, born 25 Dec 1463. Her will of 10 Jan,
proved 4 Oct 1505 (Testamenta Vetusta). m. Sir Humphrey
Talbot.

17. HUGH CHAMPERNOUN. Born 24 Nov 1417 (per the IPM of his father). King
Henry VI presented to Modbury in his minority, July 1423 (Lacy, p. 65) and
Hugh, himself, presented to Modbury Priory in March 1429/30 (Lacy, p. 123).
Member of Parliament from Barnstaple Borough in Jan 1436/7 (Parliaments,
p. 329). In 1442, Henry VI dissolved Modbury Priory (Monasticon Dioecesis
Eroniensis [1846], p. 298). His will of 8 Dec 1443 was proved 10 Jan 1443/4
(Consistory Court of London, Register Sharp 5, 350).
He was married to Alice Bois, daughter of John Bois, of Wood, and was the
sole executrix of her husband's will.
Children:
21. William Champernoun, m. Elizabeth Chuderlegh.
22. Thomas Champernoun.

18. RICHARD CHAMPERNOUN. Born 6 Jan 1435 (IPM of his father); died 26 May
1468 (IPM 8 Edw. IV file 28 (35)).
He married Elizabeth Reynell, daughter of Walter Reynell, of Malston.
Children:
23. Margery Champernoun, born 1461.
24. Margaret Champernoun, born 1463.
m. 1) John Carminow, of co. Cornwall.
m. 2) Nicholas Cockworthy
25. Elizabeth Champernoun, born 1465, died bef. 1518.
m. William Fortescue (DCNQ, 19: 26-29, 265-270)
26. Joan Champernoun, born 1466.
27. Mary Champernoun, m. Humphrey Monk.

GENERATION 7 (nos. 21-22 only, others as above)

21. WILLIAM CHAMPERNOUN. Underage in 1449, he died 7 Oct 1464, seized of the
manors of Modbury, Dodbroke and Bridford, with the advowson of the church of
Dodbroke, held of John Champernon, of Beer Ferrers (IPM 5 Edw.
IV, no. 12 (2)). In his will of 6 Oct 1464, proved 24 Nov 1464, he named his
wife, Elizabeth, his son, John, and his brother Thomas, (PCC Wills Godyn 7.
He was married to Elizabeth Chuderlegh, daughter of John Chuderlegh (DCNQ,
14: 218-221).
Children:
28. Sir John Champernoun, born 1458, being aged 6
at the death of his father; died 30 Apr 1503 at
Ashton Rohant, Oxfordshire (IPM 23 Hen. VII, no. 86).

Do you happen to have a list of the children and grandchildren of Margaret
Champernoun who married Robert Hill? As I recall, one of her daughters
married Otes Gilbert as his 2nd wife. I'm trying to figure out which of Otes
Gilbert's wife is the mother of his daughter, Jane (or Joan) who married into
the Norbury family. Can you help me? I assume Jane (or Joan)'s mother was
Otes Gilbert's 2nd wife who was nee Hill. Vivian doesn't answer this question.
Can you help? I'd appreciate it. All for now. Hastily, Douglas Richardson

Vivian furnishes the names of the children of Robert and Margaret (Champernoun)
Hill in a pedigree of Hill of Shilston, p. 486. I would venture to say the
information is probably correct as he gives not only their names, but exact
dates of birth:

John Hill, born 29 May 1420
Robert Hill, born April 1421
William Hill, born 20 Oct 1422
Thomas Hill, born 21 Nov 1423
Margaret Hill, m. Richard Fortescue, of
Fallapit
Elizabeth Hill, m. Otes Gilbert as his 2nd wife.

Otho Gilbert, of Compton, Devonshire was born at Compton 24 Mar 1419 and
baptised in the Church of St. John the Baptist at Marledon. He died 2 Feb
1493. Sheriff ofDevonshire 1475-6, he was a Yorkist and was the first on the
list of those to receive knighthood if Edward V had been crowned. His IPM was
taken at Exeter 5 Aug 1493 and cancelled 17 Nov 1514 because it was not
indented as the statute required.

Re: Pole's Devon, p. 280; IPM, Henry VII, 1: no. 755; Lists and Indexes, 9:
36; Devon and Cornwall Notes & Queries, 20: 63; Paget's Prince of Wales, 2:
472; Vivian, p. 405, 486.

Among the children of Elizabeth Hill and Otho Gilbert was Joan (or Jane), the
wife of Sir John Norbury (c1443-1504) about whom you presumably have the full
range of biographical data.
