I have spent hours studying the documents related with
Jimena Diaz, The Cid´s wife, and I am not convinced by
any of the hypothesis which give her a family. The
points we are sure about her, are:
1- Her name was Jimena Diaz and she was sister of
Rodrigo, Fernando and Aurovita, and half-sister of
Oneca Díaz.
2-All of them were sons and daughters of the count
Diego Fernández.
3- Rodrigo, Fernando and Jimena litigated for the
property of the monastery of San Salvador de Tol,
because they say they had inherited rights to it. The
general idea is they had these rights because of their
father Diego Fernández and their grandfather Fernando
Gundemariz, son of the founder of the monastery:
Gundemaro Pinioliz. But the document is very clear
and says: ??et ipsi debenat illud habere post partem
matris sue domne???et amite sue done Urracce
comitisse.? (This last one is Urraca Fernandez,
Fernando Gundemariz´s daughter) The sense of the
document is clear: the rights came form the maternal
family.
4- The Mother´s name is not in the document. The space
is in blank. Menéndez Pidal says he sow a document,
today lost, with the name of Cristina. It could be and
probably it was her name, but ¿who was she?
5- Alfonso VI calls Jimena Díaz ?neptem suam?. This
means nephew, but could be another relationship too.
For that reason, Menéndez Pidal said Cristina was a
daughter of Fernando Gundemariz and the infanta
Jimena, Alfonso V´s daughter. However, we know today
Fernando Gundemariz was married with a woman named
Mumadona Ordoñez, and a marriage with an infanta
necessarily appears at least in a document, in this is
not the case.
In addition, there is another point, which I cannot
fit with any hypothesis: Fernando Diaz, Jimena´s
brother, gave an ?arras chart? to his wife and in it;
he gave a part of a monastery that he had inherited of
Jimena Peláez and another part of this same monastery,
which he had inherited of ?his aunt Elvira?. However,
Jimena Peláez is not apparently part of his family.
She was a granddaughter of the Infanta Cristina,
Vermudo II´s daughter, and Jimena Peláez really had a
sister named Elvira. ¿why Fernando Diaz had an
inheritance of one or two persons whom are not of his
family? Besides, Fernando is ever the first witness
in all the documents related with Jimena Peláez´s
family. ¿Why was him so near of this family?
To summarize, in my opinion there is a mistery in the
origins of Jimena´s mother, but some hidden already in
these old times. It seems all people was hidden the
mother of the Diaz brothers.
