I have not put sources here, some of which come from messages to
the ng, themselves not all sourced.
The traditional pedigree of the Lusignans was revised by Painter,
in which he argues the existence of an additional HUGH (HUGH
VIIIa here)
I hope I have not made too many errors.

MYTHOLOGY
The castle at Lusignan is said to be have been built by Raymond, a
relative of the Counts POITIERS and his mythical wife, the spirit of
the fountain of Lusignan. He broke his vow and spied her on a
Saturday, to find that she had turned into a serpent from the waist
down. She flew out of the castle window never to be seen again, but
on the death of a member of the Lusignan family, she is heard crying
out. Another source states she was a dau. of the fairy Pressine whom
she had shut up in a mountain to avenge his wrongs, but he caste a
spell that she should metamorphosed every Saturday, unless and until
she found an husband who would vow not to see her on Saturdays. This
history is related at length with the adventures of Melusine's
numerous progeny: by JEAN d'ARRAS, in his chronique de la princesse,
written in 1387 at the desire of JOHN Dk of BERRY, for the amusement
of the duke and of his sister Marie of France, duchess of Bar. Some
writers have supposed Melusine to be a corruption of mere Lucine, the
deity invoked in childbirth, widow of a king of Jerusalem, and with
Mevrant wife of GEOFFROI de Lusignan.
She has also been identified as Morphia dau of Gabriel of Melitene
and wife of Baldwin II of Jerusalem and mother of Melisende who was
the 2nd wife of Fulk (-1143) count of Anjou. Another version states
that the story arose because HUGH VIII's wife Sarracena\Sarazine was
a Saracen. I suppose half human and half serpent could be allegorical
for `of mixed blood'. The soubriquet "le Brun" applied to many members
of this family signifies a dark complexion, another indication of
eastern blood, although the term seems to have pre-dated Sarracena
a) HUGH I The Hunter; Sire of Lusignan in Poitiou and vassal of
Counts of Poitiers in the late 9th or 10th century. There is
no evidence supporting a link with the Merovingian dynasty as
shown in the book The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail.
b) HUGH V (c1015-8 Oct 1060); seigneur de Lusignan; m Almodis/
Almode (-16 Oct 1071 murdered by her step-s PIERRE RAMON/

c) HUGH VIII (c1118-c1172) de Lusignan; The BROWN; m Bergone/
Bourgogne/Burgone (c1120-aft 11 Apr 1169); Dame de Fontenayda
d of GEOFFREY de RANCON; Seigneur de Taillebourg. HUGH VIII
is sometimes known as "le Vieux" - The Old, so perhaps he was
born sometime before 1118 - he can not have died much after
1172.
In late 1163 NAR ED-DIN taking advantage of AMALRIC's absence
in Egypt, attacked Tripoli. He invaded the Buqaia in order to
lay siege to Krak castle. But HUGH de Lusignan, GEOFFREY
MARTEL, brother to Ct ANGOULEME and their followers, were
passing through Tripoli on return from Jerusalem. They
joined Ct RAYMOND and an urgent appeal to Antioch brought
BOHEMOND III and the Imperial general CONSTANTINE COLOMAN
down from the north. This united army marched swiftly
through the hills and surprised the Moslems at their camp
below Krak. After a short battle, in which COLOMAN and his
troops distinguished themselves, NAR ED-DIN fled in disorder
to Homs, regrouped his army and received reinforcement whence
the Christians abandoned the pursuit. However in 1164 HUGH
with BOHEMOND, RAYMOND of Tripoli and CONSTANTINE COLOMAN
were taken prisoners at the siege of Harenc and taken to
Aleppo. HUGH died in captivity.
