Hello all! New to this group.

I am attempting to collect accurate information regarding the town Elmore in
Glou. Co. There is a church there called St. John the Baptist.

As the town seems to be tiny, and not many Elmores in the UK, I'm having a
hard time here.

I have documented, courtesy of the Mormons, back to a Peter Elmore being
born in England abt. 1615.

I have a theory that not only the Elmores left England in a group, but also
some Walkers and others, as I can research the Elmore family being
established in Kentucky abt. 1800.

They apparently landed in Virginia (???), went to North Carolina, and my
people moved to KY.

Can anyone help me with info about Elmore, England???

Thanks very much!

The manor of Elmore in Gloucestershire was held by the Guise (Gyse,
Guyse, etc.) family since well back into the Medieval period and, for
all I know, still is. So I wonder if another family would have taken the
their name from that manor. I know of no other towns in England with
that name, except Elmore Back, which is right next door to Elmore.

The Guise family is ancestral to Jane Haviland, whose two sons by
William Torrey emigrated to Massachusetts with their widowed father in
1640.

Yes, the Guise family still have Elmore Manor. The only Peter Elmore I could find
was one marrying in 1615, in Lincolnshire, which is at the other end of the
country from Gloucester. I also noted that the few Elmores mixed in with all the
Elmers, were predominantly from eastern counties in England. A cursory glance at
the 1881 census shows much the same picture. I cannot find any other place called
Elmore in England, from my maps (which do ot name every hamlet), but there are
similarly-named places: Elmer in West Sussex; Elmere in Gloucester; Elmers End in
London, and Elmers Green in Lancashire. If you can get a hold of the Victoria
County History (presume there was one for Gloucestershire) you might find more
useful information. According the the 1881 census, 353 people were living in
Elmore, including the Guise family living at Elmore Court. It is not necessarily
the case that people called Elmore came from the village of Elmore, so you may
well be barking up the wrong tree! Occasionally, foundlings were named after the
place where they were found, which is something to take into consideration,
especially considering the rarity of this name, that, and its similarity to Elmer,
Elmire, and others.
