I am seeking constructive comments on the following new Buchanan royal descent.

I have not seen this particular line before. Gary Boyd Roberts in
"Ancestors of American Presidents" shows a Buchanan descent from King Robert
III through Margaret Edmonstone to President James Buchanan; but he notes
that he considered that line too tentative to include in "The Royal
Descents of 500 Immigrants." If the tentative aspect of that line which Gary
refers to is the link between Margaret Edmonstone and Janet Buchanan, wife
of Thomas Buchanan, 3rd Laird of Carbeth, then it is worth noting that this
line doesn't suffer the same weakness.

By the way, these Buchanans also are twice descended from King Robert II
through the wife of Patrick Buchanan, 16th Laird of Buchanan, who was an
unnamed daughter of Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll.

Documentation

1-2. Mary Stewart, second daughter of King Robert III of Scotland, married
firstly George, 1st Earl of Angus, in 1397. (Smith, The Parish of
Strathblane, pp. 104-105) The 1st Earl of Angus was taken captive at the
Battle of Homildon Hill on September 14, 1402. (Paul, vol. i, p. 173) The
1st Earl of Angus died in 1404. (Smith, The Parish of Strathblane, pp.
104-105)

2-3. William Douglas, 2nd Earl of Angus, was the eldest son of Mary Stewart
and the 1st Earl of Angus. (Paul, vol. i, pp. 173-174) The 2nd Earl of Angus
married Margaret Hay, daughter of Sir William Hay of Yester, in about 1425,
when they obtained papal dispensation for their marriage. (Paul, vol. i, p.
175) The 2nd Earl of Angus was succeeded by his eldest son in 1437. (Paul,
vol. i, p. 175)

3-4. Helen Douglas, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Angus and Margaret Hay,
married William Graham, 2nd Laird of Graham. (Paul, vol. vi, pp. 222-223)
The 2nd Laird of Graham died in about 1471; Helen Douglas was alive in 1480.
(Paul, vol. vi, p. 222)

4-5. Walter Buchanan, 15th Laird of Buchanan, married a daughter of the
Laird of Graham and his wife, a daughter of the Earl of Angus. (Auchmar, p.
44) The 15th Laird of Buchanan married Isabel before November 26, 1463.
(Smith, Strathendrick, p. 286) The 15th Laird of Buchanan died before the
end of 1526, when the 17th Laird of Buchanan succeeded him. (Smith,
Strathendrick, p. 286)

5-6. Patrick Buchanan, 16th Laird of Buchanan, was a son of the 15th Laird
of Buchanan and his wife, a daughter of the Laird of Graham. (Auchmar, p.
44) The 16th Laird of Buchanan married a daughter of the Earl of Argyll.
(Auchmar, p. 45)

6-7. George Buchanan, 17th Laird of Buchanan, was a son of the 16th Laird of
Buchanan and his wife, a daughter of the Earl of Argyll. (Auchmar, p. 45)
The 16th Laird of Buchanan had two sons and two daughters. (Auchmar, p. 45)
The 16th Laird of Buchanan died before March 4, 1502/3. (Smith,
Strathendrick, p. 287) [Therefore, the 16th Laird of Buchanan probably
married in about 1494; and he probably was born before about 1473; and his
wife probably was born in about 1474--this means she must have been a
daughter of Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll, rather than a daughter of
Colin Campbell, 3rd Earl of Argyll, as supposed by Auchmar; and the 17th
Laird of Buchanan probably was born in about 1497.]

7-8. George Buchanan, 17th Laird of Buchanan, married firstly Margaret
Edmonstone, daughter of the Laird of Duntreath, and married secondly Janet
Cuningham, daughter of the Laird of Craigens. (Auchmar, pp. 45-46) At this
point in his narrative, Auchmar mentions three children of the 17th Laird of
Buchanan, saying the first child--John--was a son of Margaret Edmonstone and
the second and third children--William and Margaret--were born to Janet
Cuningham. (Auchmar, pp. 45-46) Later in his narrative, Auchmar says Thomas
Buchanan, 3rd Laird of Carbeth, married firstly a daughter of Laird Douglas
of Mains, and married secondly Janet Buchanan, daughter of the Laird of
Buchanan. (Auchmar, pp. 112-113)

8-9. John Buchanan, 1st Laird of Gartincaber, was the eldest son of Janet
Buchanan and the 3rd Laird of Carbeth. (Auchmar, p. 113) The third son of
Janet Buchanan and the 3rd Laird of Carbeth, William Buchanan, was born in
about 1547. (Smith, Strathendrick, p. 347) [Therefore, the 1st Laird of
Gartincaber probably was born in about 1541; and his mother, Janet Buchanan,
probably was born in about 1521; and Janet Buchanan must have been a
daughter of the 17th Laird of Buchanan. But it is unclear from currently
available records whether Janet Buchanan was a daughter of the Laird's first
wife, Margaret Edmonstone, or his second wife, Janet Cuningham.]

9-10. George Buchanan, 2nd Laird of Gartincaber, was a son of the 1st Laird.
(Smith, Strathendrick, p. 350) The 2nd Laird of Gartincaber married
Elizabeth Leckie, daughter of Walter Leckie of Disheour. (Smith,
Strathendrick, p. 350)

10-11. John Buchanan, 1st Laird of Blairlusk, was the eldest son of the 2nd
Laird of Gartincaber and Elizabeth Leckie. (Smith, Strathendrick, p. 350)
George Buchanan, second son of the 2nd Laird of Gartincaber, served as
attorney for his mother, Elizabeth Leckie, on November 25, 1634. (Smith,
Strathendrick, p. 350) [Therefore, George Buchanan, second son of the 2nd
Laird of Gartincaber, probably was born before about 1613; and the 1st Laird
of Blairlusk probably was born before about 1609.]

11-12. George Buchanan, 2nd Laird of Blairlusk, was the eldest son of the
1st Laird of Blairlusk, probably by an unknown first wife. (Smith,
Strathendrick, p. 350) The 2nd Laird of Blairlusk sold Blairlusk to his
brother, moved to Deroran, County Tyrone, Ireland, in 1674, and married
Elisabeth Mayne in 1675. (Smith, Strathendrick, p. 350)

12-13. William Buchanan, father of Robert Buchanan of Cumberland County,
Pennsylvania, was second son of the 2nd Laird of Blairlusk and Elisabeth
Mayne. (Smith, Strathendrick, pp. 350-351)

13-14. Walter Buchanan, who lived in East Pennsborough, Cumberland County,
Pennsylvania, was a brother of Robert Buchanan of the same county and a son
of William Buchanan, son of the 2nd Laird of Blairlusk. (Browning, p. 541)
Walter Buchanan is memorialized on a large stone in Evergreen Cemetery at
Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, that contains the following
inscriptions: "Here lyes the body of Andrew Buchanan who departed this life
January the 19th, 1759, Aged 43 years." "In memory of Walter Buchanan who
departed this life in the year 1780 [sic.] and of Mary Roney wife of Walter
Buchanan." A neighboring stone contains the following inscription: "Here lyf
the Body of Robert Buchanan who departed this life the 28th of Sept in the
year of our Lord 1748, Aged 51 years. Also here lyf the body of James
Buchanan who departed thif life the 21st of Nov in the year of our Lord
1751, Aged 20 yearf." (Photographs provided by Florence O'Neal.) The stone
memorializing Andrew Buchanan, Walter Buchanan, and Mary Roney contains the
following arms: Or, a lion rampant sable, armed and langued gules, within a
double tressure flory counterflory of the second. Crest: A hand holding up a
ducal cap, tufted on the top with a rose gules, within a laurel branch,
disposed orleways proper. Motto: Audaces juvo clarior hinc hones.
Supporters: two birds. (Zieber, p. 43) These are the arms of the family of
Buchanan of that Ilk. (Sir Ian Moncreiffe of that Ilk, "The Highland Clans,"
New York: Clarkson N. Potter, Inc., 1967, pp. 198-199) Walter Buchanan
signed his will February 27, 1786, with a codicil dated July 8, 1786, in
which he named his wife, Mary, and children: James, William, Robert, Walter,
Elizabeth, Janet, Mary, Margaret, and Ann. His will was proved in York
County, Pennsylvania, on December 13, 1788. (York County Probate Records,
Will Book G, p. 347) Robert Smith moved the Buchanan family stones from
Black's Cemetery, Upper Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church, to Evergreen
Cemetery at Gettysburg during the first week of September in 1856.

I just noticed the addenda et corrigenda (vol. ix) of "The Scots
Peerage" on page 19, which corrects information about the family of
Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll, says: "6. Margaret, married to
Patrick Buchanan, younger of Buchanan, tocher 600 merks. The
marriage-contract, dated at Stirling 22 June 1486, bears that my lord
shall pay so much of this sum at Michaelmas "if he may gudlie gett it"
(Third Rep. Hist. MSS. Com., 390; Fraser's Lennox Book, ii. 127, 128;
Argyll Charter-Chest)."

So, the following two additional lines of descent, showing from the
1st Earl of Argyll and his wife up to King Robert II on page 99 of
"The Royal Descents of 500 Immigrants," also apply:

1. Robert II, King of Scotland = Elizabeth Mure
2. Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany = Margaret Graham
3. Marjory Stewart = Duncan Campbell, 1st Laird of Campbell
4. Honorable Archibald Campbell = Elizabeth Somerville
5. Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll = Isabel Stewart
6. Margaret Campbell = Patrick Buchanan, 16th Laird of Buchanan

7. George Buchanan, 17th Laird of Buchanan = Margaret Edmonstone
8. Janet Buchanan = Thomas Buchanan, 3rd Laird of Carbeth
9. John Buchanan, 1st Laird of Gartincaber = _____
10. George Buchanan, 2nd Laird of Gartincaber = Elizabeth Leckie
11. John Buchanan, 1st Laird of Blairlusk = _____
12. George Buchanan, 2nd Laird of Blairlusk = Elizabeth Mayne
13. William Buchanan = Janet _____
14. Walter Buchanan = Mary Roney

and

1. Robert II, King of Scotland = Elizabeth Mure
2. Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany = Margaret Graham
3. Joan Stewart = Robert Stewart, 1st Laird of Lorne
4. John Stewart, 2nd Laird of Lorne = Agnes of the Isles
5. Isabel Stewart = Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll
6. Margaret Campbell = Patrick Buchanan, 16th Laird of Buchanan

7. George Buchanan, 17th Laird of Buchanan = Margaret Edmonstone
8. Janet Buchanan = Thomas Buchanan, 3rd Laird of Carbeth
9. John Buchanan, 1st Laird of Gartincaber = _____
10. George Buchanan, 2nd Laird of Gartincaber = Elizabeth Leckie
11. John Buchanan, 1st Laird of Blairlusk = _____

Hello,

Although its far from being an authoritative source, William
Buchanan of Auchmar's "Inquiry Into the Genealogy and Present State of
Ancient Scottish Surnames with the Origin and Descent of the Highland
Clans and Family of Buchanan" (1723) gives a descent from Robert II for
this line but omits any mention of a daughter Janet who m. Thomas of
Carbeth.
Here is the line. The numbers next to individuals refer to the page
numbers in the book.

[1. Robert II, King of Scotland]
[2. Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany]
[3. Murdoch Stewart, Duke of Albany]
4. Isobel Stewart = Sir Walter Buchanan, 13th Laird of Buchanan (171-2)
5. Thomas Buchanan of Carbeth (235)
6. John Buchanan of Easter Ballat (235)
7. Thomas Buchanan of Carbeth = dau. of Buchanan of That Ilk (236)
[The book doesn't specify which Buchanan of That Ilk and in the section
on the Chiefs there is no mention of this daughter' probably due to an
oversight on the author's part.]
8. John Buchanan of Gartincaber (239)
9. George Buchanan of Gartincaber (239)
10. John Buchanan of Blairluisk (239)
11. George Buchanan. Apparently living in 1723. (239)

I hope this helps some. I descend from Annabella Buchanan, dau. of the
14th Laird of That Ilk who m. James Stewart of Baldorran and from whom
the Stewart of Ledcreich trace their descent.

Sincerely,
Kelsey J. Williams

Dear Kelsey,

Thank you for your thoughts. Here are a few of my own.

1. Although I have found minor mistakes in his work (i.e., see my note
concerning generations 6-7 above), I believe since Auchmar had access
to family and local records and he appears to have been a careful
scholar, his work should inspire confidence. I have not seen the
original 1723 edition of his work on the Buchanan family; but, I
assume it is essentially the same as the 1775 edition. I would like
to see the earlier edition to make a comparison though, since the page
numbers you cite do not correspond with the content of the 1775
edition.

2. Concerning the identity of the wife of Thomas Buchanan, 3rd Laird
of Carbeth, Auchmar says: "Thomas Buchanan fon and heir to the
deceafed John Buchanan in Eafter Ballat, as neareft heir to his uncle
Thomas of Carbeth, obtained charter from John Halden of Glenegeis, in
favour of himfelf and Janet Buchanan his fpoufe in life-rent, and of
Thomas Buchanan his fon in fee, of the lands of Carbeth in the year
1555. This Thomas the third of Carbeth is faid to have been firft
married to a daughter of Douglas of Mains, by whom he had Thomas his
fucceffor; and for his fecond wife, was married to a daughter of the
Laird of Buchanan. By her he had five fons, and one daughter, married
to Gregor MacGregor Glengyle's ancestor. The fons were, John, Walter,
William, Archibald, and Robert." (pp. 112-113) So, it is clear from
Auchmar that the 3rd Laird of Carbeth's wife was Janet Buchanan,
daughter of the Laird of Buchanan. By analyzing the chronology of the
two families, it is apparent that Janet Buchanan must have been a
daughter of the 17th Laird of Buchanan. Also, Auchmar's list of three
children of the 17th Laird given on pp. 45-46 appears to be
incomplete, since the 17th Laird lived a long life and was married
twice.

3. Reference the maternity of Thomas Buchanan, 1st Laird of Carbeth,
John Guthrie Smith, F.S.A.Scot., writing about Walter Buchanan, 13th
Laird of Buchanan, and his wife, Isabel Stewart ("The Parish of
Strathblane," pp. 285-6), says: "but his children must have been by a
former wife. He had three sons: (1) Patrick, who succeeded him; (2)
Maurice; and (3) Thomas of Drummikill, ancestor of the Drummikill and
Carbeth families." Smith doesn't justify his assertion that Isabel
Stewart was not the mother of these sons; so, I'm not sure what to
make of it.

4. By the way, if the lineage I describe through Janet Buchanan, wife
of the 1st Laird of Carbeth, and through Isabel Graham, wife of the
15th Laird of Buchanan, holds, some will be interested to note that
the family has a fourth line of descent from King Robert II--this one
through the king's second wife, Euphemia Ross. Here it is
(generations 1-4 from page 92 of "The Royal Descents of 500
Immigrants"):

1. Robert II, King of Scotland = Euphemia Ross
2. Katherine Stewart* = David Lindsay, 1st Earl of Crawford
3. Elizabeth Lindsay = Robert Erskine, 1st Laird of Erskine
4. Christian Erskine = Patrick Graham, 1st Laird of Graham
5. Helen Douglas = William Graham, 2nd Laird of Graham
6. Isabel Graham = Walter Buchanan, 15th Laird of Buchanan
7. Patrick Buchanan, 16th Laird of Buchanan = Margaret Campbell
8. George Buchanan, 17th Laird of Buchanan = Margaret Edmonstone
9. Janet Buchanan = Thomas Buchanan, 3rd Laird of Carbeth
10. John Buchanan, 1st Laird of Gartincaber = _____
11. George Buchanan, 2nd Laird of Gartincaber = Elizabeth Leckie
12. John Buchanan, 1st Laird of Blairlusk = _____
13. George Buchanan, 2nd Laird of Blairlusk = Elizabeth Mayne
14. William Buchanan = Janet _____
15. Walter Buchanan = Mary Roney

*also called Jean or Elizabeth

Kelsey,

I just spoke with Andrew B. MacEwen, an authority on these Buchanans.
He confirmed Auchmar's statement that Patrick Buchanan, 14th Laird of
Buchanan, was a son of Isabella Stewart, daughter of Murdach Stewart,
2nd Duke of Albany, as you posted. He acknowledged Smith's skepticism
about the relationship; and suggested that Smith's confusion stemmed
from the absence of a Buchanan inheritance in the Lennox estate. Then
Andrew explained that the 14th Laird of Buchanan did not inherit from
the Lennox estate, because the laird's mother, Isabella Stewart, was a
daughter of Murdach's first wife, Joanna Douglas, rather than
Murdach's second wife, Isabella, Countess of Lennox. Here, then, is
that lineage:

1. Robert II, King of Scotland = Elizabeth Mure
2. Robert Stewart, 1st Duke of Albany = Margaret Graham

3. Murdach Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany = Joanna Douglas
4. Isabella Stewart = Walter Buchanan, 13th Laird of Buchanan
5. Patrick Buchanan, 14th Laird of Buchanan = Janet Cunningham
5. Walter Buchanan, 15th Laird of Buchanan = Isabel Graham
6. Patrick Buchanan, 16th Laird of Buchanan = Margaret Campbell
7. George Buchanan, 17th Laird of Buchanan = Margaret Edmonstone
8. Janet Buchanan = Thomas Buchanan, 3rd Laird of Carbeth
9. John Buchanan, 1st Laird of Gartincaber = _____
10. George Buchanan, 2nd Laird of Gartincaber = Elizabeth Leckie
11. John Buchanan, 1st Laird of Blairlusk = _____
12. George Buchanan, 2nd Laird of Blairlusk = Elizabeth Mayne
13. William Buchanan = Janet _____
14. Walter Buchanan = Mary Roney

Andrew also commented on the lineage I proposed at the beginning of
this thread. I will ruminate on his thoughts and post them to the
thread later. His thorough familiarity with the people and events in
this lineage is truly remarkable. Without referring to notes, he
cited early sources and quoted dates and events up and down the
lineage.

Here is a correction to the original post.

My initial proposal contains an error--Isabella Graham, wife of Walter
Buchanan, 15th Laird of Buchanan, was a daughter of Patrick Graham,
1st Laird of Graham, and his wife Christian Erskine, rather than a
daughter of the 2nd Laird of Graham, as stated by Auchmar. The error
is apparent when comparing the chronologies of the families; and a
Genealogical Tree drawn by William Colquhoun in 1602 and published in
Smith, Strathendrick, correctly shows the 15th Laird of Buchanan's
wife as a daughter of Patrick Graham, Laird of Graham, and his wife, a
daughter of the Laird of Erskine. This difference, of course,
eliminates the descent from Robert III through the Earl of Angus.
But, it does not negate the following, apparently still valid,
lineages:

1. Robert II, King of Scotland = Elizabeth Mure

2. Robert III, King of Scotland = Annabella Drummond
3. Mary Stewart = William Edmonstone, 1st Laird of Duntreath

Our family of Mcacindoe have a ancestry to a four of the Laird of Carbeth, through a whole string of alternating Walter and I think John sires. I wondered if they had lived in Doe and come back in the 17th century. They were given lands when they returned.
