Cheers,
Phil
I have that she married Ioin/Eugene mac Allan de Ergardia,
the Lord of Lorn, who was living in 1338. THeir daughter,
Isabel de Ergadia of Lorn & Innermeath, d. c. Dec. 21,
1439, married Sir John Stewart, 1st of Grandtully, Lord of
Lorn & Innermeath. In my pedigree, I have two of their
sons, Sir James Stewart "the Black Knight of Lorn", who
died in 1448, and Robert Stewart, 1st Baron of Lorn, who
died in 1449. The former married, Sep. 21, 1439, Joan
Beaufort, 1407-1445, granddaughter of John of Gaunt who, of
course, was a son of Edward III of England. The latter
married Joan Stewart.
Sir James was the father of Sir John Stewart of Balveny,
1st Earl of Atholl, 1440-1512, who married Eleanor
Sinclair, d. 1518. Their son was Sir John Stewart, 2nd Earl
of Atholl, 1478-1521. Their son was Sir John Stewart, 3rd
Earl of Atholl, 1507-1542, who married Grizel Rattray.
Their son was John Stewart, 4th Earl of Atholl, 1530-1579,
who married Margaret Fleming. Margaret was the
granddaughter of King James IV of Scotland via his
illegitimate daughter, Janet.
John and Margaret had a dauthter, Jean Stewart, d. 1593,
who married Sir Duncan Campbell, 1st Baronet of
Glenfalloch. The Glenfaloch Campbells intermarried numerous
times with the Ardkinglass Campbells. The Robert Stewart
mentioned above who married Joan Stewart had a son, John
Stewart "the Leper" (one wonders if this was literal or
figurative), 2nd Baron of Lorn, assassinated in 1463. I do
not have the name of his wife or mistress, but he had a
daughter, Janet Stewart, who married Sir Colin Campbell,
1st Earl of Glenorchy (or Glenurchy) & Baron of Lawers,
1445-1475. His son, Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy,
1450-1513, married Margaret Douglas of Angus. THeir son,
Sir Colin Campbell, 3rd Earl of Glenorchy, d. 1523, married
Marjorie Stewart of Balveny. Their son, Sir Colin Campbell,
6th Earl of Glenorchy, d. 1583, married Katherine Ruthven.
Their son Sir Duncan Campbell, "Black Duncan", 1st Baronet
of Glenorchy, 1550-1631, married Jean Stewart of Atholl,
mentioned above.
Their son Sir Robert Campbell, 3rd Baronet of Glenorchy,
1580-1659, married Isabel Lachlan-MacIntosh. Their son, Sir
William Campbell of Glenorchy, 1621-1648, married Joan
Campbell of Ardkinglass. Their son, Robert Campbell of
Glenfalloch, married Susanna Menzies and so on down to my
mother.
The surname "Houston" I have in the Campbell of Ardkinglass
line as follows: Colin Campbell, 1st of Ardkinglass,
married 1396 by Papal License, Christina McLayman. Their
son, John Riach Campbell, 2nd of Ardkinglass, married
Marion Campbell of Craignish. THeir son, Sir Colin
Campbell, 3rd of Ardkinglass, married "Miss Houston". Their
son, Sir John Campbell, 4th of Ardkinglass, married Miss
Buchanan. Their son, Dougald Campbell of Ardailtoun had a
wife or mistress whose name I have not been able to find.
He had a son, Sir James Campbell of Ardkinglass, d. 1591,
who married Elizabeth Lawers. They had a son, Sir John
Campbell of Ardkinglass, who married Anna Campbell. THeir
son, Sir Colin Campbell of Ardkinglass, married Mary
Sempill. Their daughter, Joan Campbell of Ardkinglass,
married Sir William Campbell of Glenfalloch.
I don't know if this clears anything up for you but we're
obviously talking about the same families. Following the
pedigree that I have, It may be helpful for you to go to
the Campbell Clan site with your search engine. They have
extensive history and genealogical information. My
information came partly from that site, partly from Leo Van
de Pas, partly from Burke's Peerage, and partly from
genealogical work done by my own relatives (much of which
was in error and had to be corrected).
Good hunting, good thoughts.....Bronwen Edwards

Hello Bronwen, Ray, Phil,
The Robert Bruce - Colin Campbell connection (following) under
discussion does not involve Colin Campbell of Ardkinglas, although that cadet
of Campbell of Loch Awe does get involved as Bronwen illustrates with her
ancestry. I show the following:
..1. Robert Bruce [aka Robert the Bruce], King of Scots, d. 1329; m. 2ndly
Elizabeth de Burgh
..2. Matilda Bruce, m. Thomas Ysaak [aka Sir Thomas Ysak]
..3. NN, a daughter m. Alan mac Eoin mac Dougal, Lord of Lorn
..4. Eoin mac Alan mac Dougal, Lord of Lorn, d. ca. 1388
..5. Isabel mac Dougal, heiress of Lorn, m. Sir John Stewart of Innermeath [a
g grandson of Sir John le Stewart of Bonkil, slain at Falkirk, 1298]; he d.
1421
..6. Robert Stewart, Lord of Lorn, m. Joanna [aka Margaret], daughter of
Robert Stewart, Earl of Fife & c., lst Duke of Albany and regent of Scotland
[son of Robert II, g grandson of Robert the Bruce]
..7. John Stewart, aka Eoin Murach, Lord of Lorn, d. 1463
..8. Isabel Stewart, co-heiress of Lorn, d. 1510; m. Colin Campbell, 2nd Lord
Campbell, created lst Earl of Argyll 1457; d. 1493
Isabel carried the lands of Lorn to her husband, by which he acquired
the position on which the Earldom of Argyll was established. Isabel's
sister, Janet, was previously married to Colin's uncle Colin Campbell, who
established the Glenorchy branch of the family [see Bronwen's earlier post].
As to the Campbells of Ardkinglas, Ray and Bronwen are correct as to the
points (as far as I can see) from the first Colin on down. The connection is
as follows [originally derived from SP, the pedigree for Campbell, Duke of
Argyll]:
..1. Sir Colin Campbell, aka Colin Iongantach ['Colin the Wonderful'], lord
of Loch Awe; d. ca. 1413; m. Mariota Campbell [his second cousin and heiress
of additional lands in Argyll]. Issue:
.....1. Sir Duncan Campbell, of Loch Awe, created lst Lord
Campbell 1445 [father of Colin Campbell of Glenorchy
and grandfather of Colin Campbell, lst Earl of
Argyll; see #8 in pedigree above]
.....2. Colin Campbell, of Ardkinglas [3rd son]; m.
Christina Lamont, daughter of Robert Lamont
[mac Laomain] of Inveryne. Issue:
........1. John Campbell of Ardkinglas [see Bronwen's post]
........2. Agnes Campbell, m. Sir Patrick Houstoun of that
Ilk, d. ca. 1456
Sir Patrick Houstoun and his wife Agnes Campbell are the antecedents of
the subsequent Houstouns of that Ilk; as to whether he was the 11th chief of
that name, I am not certain [the Houstouns were a Lowland family of
Renfrewshire: certainly not a clan in the Highland sense].
The best references as to the Houstouns are a series of articles by
David Whyte, FSA in The Scottish Genealogist - the first, in Vol. XV No. 4
(Dec 1968) provides the details and documentation cites through the
Ardkinglas and Sinclair connections down to Peter Houstoun of that Ilk (k. at
Flodden, 1513] and his siblings.
Hope this helps. Good to know some of the Scots connections are still
roamin' in the gloamin'... :)
John
