Does anyone know if this is soundly based? If so who might this James
Douglas of Conons be and where does he fit (if he does) into the
Douglas clan?
taf
I believe you will find the 'Conons' appelation is a
typographic error. There is an account of Elliot(t) of Stobs in
Rulewater and Its People: An Account of the Valley of the Rule
and Its Inhabitants, by George Tancred of Weens ((Edinburgh: T.
and A. Constable, 1907) which gives on page 33 in part,
' William Elliot married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir James
Douglas of Cavers, and had issue:-
1. Gilbert, his heir.
2. Gavin married Jean Nicolson,...'
The descent of Douglas of Cavers is interesting on several
lines. The following gives one line of descent from Christian,
sister (half-sister according to some theories) of Robert _The_
Bruce and wife of Earl Gratney of Mar:
1. Robert de Brus, Earl of Carrick dju = Marjorie, C of Carrick
2. Christian de Brus = Gratney, Earl of Mar
3. Donald, Earl of Mar (d. Dupplin Moor, 1332) = Isabel
4. Margaret, Countess of Mar = William, Earl of Douglas (d. 1384)
5. James Douglas, Earl of Douglas (k. Otterburn, 1388)
6. [illegitimate] Archibald Douglas, of Cavers (d. ca. 1435)
7. William Douglas, 2nd of Cavers (d. 1464)
8. Sir Archibald Douglas, 3rd of Cavers (d. 1486)
9. Sir William Douglas, 4th of Cavers (d. 1506)
10. Sir James Douglas, 5th of Cavers (d. 1545) = Elizabeth Murray
11. Sir James Douglas, 6th of Cavers (d. 1568) = Christian Kerr
12. Sir William Douglas, 7th of Cavers = Euphemia Kerr
13. Sir James Douglas, 8th of Cavers (d. 1612) = Margaret Cranston
14. [possibly by 2nd wife] Elizabeth Douglas = William Elliott
I hope this (and the possibilities via Kerr, Cranston & c.)
adds something of additional interest to your own ancestry.
Cheers,
John
The mother is shown as Elizabeth Douglas daughter of Sir James Douglas of
Cavers.
Hope this helps

Not mine, but it would represent a novel royal descent, for NY
immigrant Elliot (Haswell) Pollock, d. 1871, (mother of Emeline
"Mille" Pollock, first woman Recorder of Deeds for New York City, d.
1907).
