Recently I found a charter in which Orabel's father, Ness, was called
Ness Fitz Countess, and another in which he was called Ness Fitz
William Lineth. I assume Ness' mother was a Scottish Countess and
presumably high born. But the name of Ness' father, William, suggests
that he was Norman English. If so, we must presume that Ness' mother
was also Norman English and came to Scotland on her marriage to a
Scottish earl.
Ness Fitz William was born say 1100/5. He is known to have had a
brother (or half-brother) named Constantine. I find that Ness
witnessed a charter before 1124, for Etheldred, Earl of Fife. Could
Etheldred have been Ness' step-father?
Does any have any idea who Ness' mother might have been? Also, does
anyone know what the name Lineth might represent. For Ness' mother to
have married a Scottish earl, one would assume that her first husband
William was a tenant in chief to an English king. If so, William
should be traceable in English records. I assume his English
properties would have fallen to the Quincy family as his heirs.
All for now. Best always, Douglas Richardson
