I guess it depends what you call posh. He was fourth-generation 'born to the sea', and would likely have had personal tuition in childhood, but was almost continuously afloat from the age of 12/13. His title was a reward for military success in the Napoleonic Wars. He would very much have been a fish out of water in 'posh' society.

(Perhaps best known from the fictional world of his protege, Horatio Hornblower.)
